Baseball has surprisingly stumped the phrase ‘Never meet your heroes.’ Young fans grow up watching their favorite MLB players on screen and at the ballpark, wanting to emulate them. Just like what Dave Winfield did for Derek Jeter, the retired New York Yankees captain has done for players today. Although Bronx fans may hate it, one of them is Houston Astros star Alex Bregman.

Proudly wearing no. 2 on his back, the third baseman idolized the Yankees Hall of Famer growing up. Incidentally, he even hit a grand slam, the first of his career, on Derek Jeter Day at Yankee Stadium in 2017. The connections between the two are endless and the duo has met behind the mic for FOX Sports this year. To immortalize yesterday’s meeting, the crew decided to frame it in a picture.

Alex Bregman Poses With a Reluctant Derek Jeter
In Captain Clutch’s days, the Astros weren’t quite the threat they are today. In their seventh consecutive trip to the Championship Series, Houston has been dominant with two World Series victories in that span. Although 2022 was hard won, the cheating scandal stain still mars 2017. Yankees fans detest the Astros as much as ever, especially since their team has failed to make it to the postseason this year.

When Alex Bregman sat down with the FOX Sports crew yesterday, including Derek Jeter this year, Kevin Burkhardt mentioned their connection. As a memento, he suggested the two take a picture together, and David Ortiz readily obliged. As Bregman got up to pose, pushing chairs out of the way, Jeter could be seen smiling. But to many, it was a reluctant photo.

Everyone joked around, finding similarities in their number 2 jerseys. Big Papi even hilariously offered to become a wedding photographer if ever needed. While the former Yankees slugger may have seemed unwilling, it was a great night for Bregman. The Astros are going 2-2 against the Texas Rangers and may have a chance to defend their World Series crown. But baseball fans, especially Yankees Nation, loathe it.

It’s likely that Jeter only did it because he could not refuse a gesture when he was on camera if he truly wanted to. But the Bronx still feels the same!
