Alex Bregman was sidelined with a quad injury—sure. But then the team was hopeful. Boston Red Sox manager, after all, told reporters just a week earlier that Bregman was getting closer to returning. So the hope was the bats would be loud, the momentum going. And maybe Boston can catch a break.

In the meantime, the team leaned on the idea that they could do without Rafael Devers. But after the entire debacle of sending off their best hitter, Boston was in shock. Tim Healey mentioned that, according to Trevor Story, while they missed Devers’ bat, his absence wasn’t quite the black hole that people made it out to be.

“You miss his presence,” Story said, “but it’s not something that in the game we’re like, ‘Oh man, where’s Raffy?’” So, they had the quiet confidence. But well, that belief about the depth now may be on the way to unraveling, as they have not one but two pieces of rough news.

According to Tim Healey, “It looks like Alex Bregman won’t be back until after the All-Star break, Alex Cora said.” This means the earliest return would be on July 18, and that’s only if everything goes smoothly without a hiccup. For a team that’s hovering below .500 and clinging to even a glimmer of momentum, this delay stings. And this is not the only news.

Cora also confirmed that Kutter Crawford, the Boston Red Sox’s innings-eater and workhorse last season, will undergo wrist surgery. This will sadly end his 2025 campaign, and it’s a brutal loss! Especially when you consider that Crawford missed early-season time due to a knee injury. Now, the return is not in the cards till 2026! The timing could not be worse.

As of Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox sit at 40-41, fourth in the AL East, and their rotation is hanging by a thread. Sure, Bello, Houck, and Crochet offer some control, but there is no such Plan B.

Dobbins and Fitts are names, but they are not guarantees. Boston has a lot of things to think about, from reinforcements, resets, and the trade deadline to Bregman’s return and—even—Bregman’s future in town!

Boston Red Sox get a hopeful update from Alex Bregman’s agent

With the way the season is shaping up, the Boston Red Sox could use a boost. And getting Alex Bregman back might be the thing to rev the team forward. Now, according to Scott Boras, Bregman isn’t just looking to finish out the year quietly. He is open to sticking around in Boston.

This is huge news, given he signed a three-year, $120 million deal but still has an option to walk after this year.

For now, Bregman and Boras seem to be thinking about extending the stay in Boston. And it makes sense. Bregman has been lights out before ending up on the IL. He was hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Now, Boras, as usual, had plenty to say. He told the Boston Globe, “I always tell the team, and Alex directs me to tell them, we’re always open to any conversation. Any player who plays well somewhere, it’s something that’s important for the team and important for the player. It’s an additive.” He also mentioned Bregman and family: “Playing in Boston is something they really enjoy, and the community has been wonderful to them.”

And well, Bregman’s return could shuffle some of the things defensively. If he is healthy, it gives Boston the flexibility to move Marcelo Mayer over to second base and lock down the infield. But there is still rehab left to do, and Boras ensured that they are going to be smart about the timing.

But for now, Boston Red Sox fans can rest assured that Bregman is not counting days until his free agency. He seems to like Boston, and given the feeling is mutual, he may be on the way to something more permanent.
