Alex Rodriguez Shares Invaluable Media Advice to Young Athletes, Recalling His Own Shortcomings Amidst Candid Self-Reflections

Alex Rodriguez has always had an interesting relationship with the media. Ever since he broke into the scene, A-Rod has been one of the most popular faces in baseball. But with popularity, he also became controversy’s favorite child. Through his interviews and off-the-cuff comments, Rodriguez constantly stirred emotions, but now he’s different. Perhaps that’s why A-Rod has come up with some important advice for every young athlete.

While A-Rod is still looking to enter the Hall-of-Fame, he’s nonetheless a huge part of every baseball fan’s fandom. A-Rod was just eighteen when he turned into a superstar, and that brought a host of issues for him. Perhaps that’s why he’s showing special care for younger athletes who are about to burst onto the scene like he did.

Alex Rodriguez recently came to The Dan Le Batard Show. While talking about a variety of things related to his career and how he dealt with his down moments, A-Rod decided to advise all the youngsters. His advice was simple – do a media internship.

“I wish I would’ve done a media internship with Fox for a couple of years when I was in high school. To then reverse engineer and understand how the media works at play. ‘Cause I was an infant when it came to dealing with the media,” Rodriguez confessed. 

Rodriguez then went on to share how he was not ready for the sudden rise that he experienced. One moment he was in high school, the other he was standing across from the legend, Roger Clemens. A-Rod’s life took a massive turn and because of his inexperience, he didn’t know how to deal with it. 

A-Rod had a love/hate relationship with the media. But all the negative press did affect him mentally. Perhaps that’s why Rodriguez doesn’t want the young athletes to experience the same that he did. So he suggests the young athletes study media to understand how it works, so that when they make a splash, they know how to deal with the attention.

The current Fox stint is what made Rodriguez understand the importance of media management. The interview also focused on other aspects of A-Rod’s sudden rise.

A-Rod’s sudden rise made him anxious 

At one point during the interview, A-Rod confessed that his early rise made him anxious. From being a normal teenager, he suddenly became a millionaire. A-Rod knew nothing about fame and suddenly he was the number one draft pick and the league’s biggest upcoming star. All the attention and expectations made him anxious.

Perhaps that’s why A-Rod is trying to make young athletes understand the cost of fame. He wants them to be ready or else they might make the same mistakes he did. The controversy’s favorite child is ensuring no one faces the same situations.
