Despite being controversial, Barry Bonds was one of the best ever to play the game. While he may have bid farewell to the game, the San Francisco Giants legend has remained connected to the game ever since. Therefore, back in 2015, multiple reports suggested Bonds become the hitting coach of the Miami Marlins. 

And since they were only reports at the time, ex-Marlins player Giancarlo Stanton was asked about the same. Notably, Stanton weighing in on the reports of Bonds being a coach of his team is worth getting to know. Below is what he said.

What did the Yankees star say about disputed home run king Barry Bonds?

Because of his connection with performance-enhancing drugs, Barry Bonds remains the disputed home run king with 762 career home runs. Even so, one cannot deny that his hitting abilities were better than most of the players in the league. Stanton, in 2015, also supported the fact despite the controversies surrounding him, because of his abilities, Bonds would be a good hitting coach.

Therefore, during an interview with TMZ Sports, when Stanton was asked about his feelings about Bonds becoming the coach of his team, he said, “It’s all about the bottom line man. I mean controversies aside, the man was a genius, and for that knowledge and that outside to watch us every day, and give us that knowledge, it’s what we need.”

And it might have been exactly what the team needed at the time. Notably, after the year 2003, the Marlins hadn’t won any division title, NL pennant, or World Series.

Did the reports come true of Bonds becoming the hitting coach?

The reports of Barry Bonds becoming the hitting coach of the Marlins did come true when the ex-athlete signed a contract in December 2015. However, Bonds’ stint with the Marlins did not last even a year. He was relieved of his duties as a hitting coach in October 2016.

Needless to say, the Marlins did not perform as well as they were expected under Bonds’ guidance. They managed to not reach the playoffs for the 13th time in a row. And they also wrapped up the 2016 season with 79 wins and 82 losses.
