You frequently see a pop-up window with the most recent MLB news, and each time, an analyst provides their own “insider news.” In a similar vein, another one that goes beyond the St. Louis Cardinals’ performance this season is coming directly from one of the MLB insiders’ offices. Jon Heyman revealed a huge spoiler regarding a possible Cardinals trade as the 2025 season heats up: can the Cardinals’ $260 million star join an AL team?
St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman, Nolan Arenado, has been the talk of the town for quite some time. The trade rumors continue to swirl in the air ever since the names of the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers came up, who were reportedly in trade talks. The Yankees may have been interested in Arenado because of Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury, but the Dodgers were also anticipated to express interest in the third baseman. Additionally, the New York Mets were looking to add players to their roster. However, Jon Heyman doesn’t appear to agree.
Heyman believes that Nolan Arenado can move to the Detroit Tigers. “I mean, they are not getting much out of third base. St. Louis would trade with them more easily than the Cubs. For the Tigers, it’s a mere $20 million, and I like Arenado. I think he’s still got something in him and the Tigers could use a little more veteran presence, I think.” That’s why Heyman wants to see Arenado moving to the Tigers.

The third base position is still a significant hole in the Detroit Tigers’ roster because of the outfield’s history of injuries. They even made an attempt to sign Alex Bregman, who signed with the Boston Red Sox in the last seconds. Now with Matt Vierling’s injury and Jace Jung not living up to the expectations for which he got optioned back to Triple-A, Nolan Arenado can be a great bet.
Heyman further stated that Arenado still has the skills and the Tigers could utilize his veteran presence. “They’ve got a good mix, good clubhouse. They got a good manager. They have so many good young players; even with the injuries, they play great ball. Javy Baez, as we talked about, is doing great, but I’d like to see Nolan Arenado join the Tigers.”
The Tigers are currently at the top of the American League Central with a 29-15 record. Now that the third base position isn’t yielding any noteworthy results, acquiring Arenado could significantly improve their chances, regardless of his performance thus far this season. Nolan Arenado has managed to post four home runs and 17 RBIs at a .253 average, .335 OBP and a .731 OPS.
But there is another team eyeing Nolan Arenado—the New York Mets, maybe?

Amid the speculations surrounding the St. Louis Cardinals’ $260 million star, the New York Mets have emerged as a strong contender this time. Despite a strong start to the season, they have identified the designated hitter and third base positions as the areas that require improvements. Despite his current lackluster play, Nolan Arenado has won 10 Gold Glove awards and been selected to the All-Star team eight times.

Although the Mets are standing atop the NL East leaderboard with a 28-16 record, despite their superstar Juan Soto not living up to the hype, they want to focus on the larger goals ahead. In order to lift the World Series title, they know very well that they need to give a strong fight against teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, who boast a strong roster.
Thus, looking forward, the Mets are focused on adding another player who has the veteran skills and experience to lift the team in times of adversity and help them to win. Greg Amsinger of MLB Network, weighing in on the importance of the trade, said, “He is proving he’s still an elite defender at third base and the bat is not in the rearview mirror. Had a walk-off home run just a couple of days ago. I think Nolan Arenado still has immense value, and there are big-market teams that need help at third base.”
And it’s true. Who knows whether a change in environment can bring his form back or not? Moreover, Mets’ Mark Vientos neither could deliver in the clutch moments nor deliver the expected offensive and defensive production. Thus, if the Mets could get Arenado, it would be a major upgrade; however, in that case, they might need to trade Vientos or maybe send him to the designated hitter position.
