Derek Jeter helped fulfill a sick child’s wish

Back in 2006, Derek Jeter helped an 11-year-old Steven Castro, suffering from Crohn’s disease, fulfill a lifelong dream. Steven was a huge Jeter fan. The Yankee’s shortstop met him through “My Wish”. After meeting Steven, Jeter talked to him about his family, his favorite music and even dancing as he was doing his batting practice. He even introduced Steven to some of his teammates and cracked a few jokes along the way.

Additionally, Jeter went the extra mile and gave the child a special present, one of his own bats. The Yankees legend wanted Steven to feel as if he was a part of the Yankee family, even if just for a day. Jeter even posed for pictures with him in what was a touching moment.

Steven had been through surgery and treatment in the months prior and meeting Jeter would have really lifted his spirits. The 11-year-old dreamt of growing up and playing for the Yankees, and meeting his idol would’ve made that goal seem a little closer.

This moment was just an example of how Jeter was more than just a baseball player. His impact was beyond the ballpark and truly immeasurable.

What did Steven Castro say about meeting Jeter?

On the 10-year anniversary of the 2006 “My Wish” campaign, Steven spoke about the experience. According to ESPN, he said “My wish gave me life. For a time period, it kept me hopeful and determined to get through tough times. It’s the No. 1 highlight in my life. No other experience I’ve had/will have will be as impactful as this one. Now 21, I am a photographer, writer, cinematographer, graphic designer, DJ and musician.”
