This was a season of firsts for Tri-City’s reliable slugger, and fate put him in his most hazardous struggle yet. Rio Foster, a 22-year-old, potential Angels outfielder who had just been named Northwest League Player of the Month, was involved in a car accident on Friday in Richland, Washington. This horrific accident has had the whole baseball community holding its breath, and the Angels have finally broken their silence with a message.

The accident happened when Foster was a passenger in a car that crashed. The crash was so violent that two of the four people in the car were thrown out, and two passengers, including Foster, suffered critical injuries and remain hospitalized.

Soon after the accident, the Angels organisation shared a message on X. The circumstances surrounding the crash paint a troubling picture. The Richmond Police Department posted on Facebook that “the driver of the vehicle involved in this collision was recently released from the hospital and booked into the Benton County Jail.” They named 23-year-old Ashante Sanders-Jackson as the driver who is now facing three counts of Vehicular Assault. Moreover, police found that the driver was drunk.

Foster’s career had been steadily rising, and he was building a strong resume for the Angels until this accident. The Georgia native was picked in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB Draft after going to Florence-Darlington Technical College. And just the day before the accident, he was named for NL player of the month for a good slash line: .267/.407/.439 over 93 games at High-A Tri-City.

The Angels’ prospect accident had effects that went beyond the hospital walls. It changed the team’s schedule right away and made it hard to decide what was most important in professional sports.

Dust Devils–Hops game cancelled amid Rio Foster’s critical condition

The Tri-City Dust Devils were going to play the Hillsboro Hops on Friday night, but baseball suddenly didn’t seem as important. The Angels decided to call off the game when Rio Foster, a prospect for the team, was in a serious vehicle accident earlier in the day. They put family and health ahead of the score.

The team put out a statement on the decision that said, “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Dust Devils organization are with Rio Foster, who was a passenger in a car accident early this morning and sustained serious injuries. Tonight’s game against the Hillsboro Hops has been canceled.” It was a moment that reminded everyone—players, staff, and fans—that some things are simply greater than the game.

Manager Andy Montgomery agreed, saying that Foster’s struggle was more important than any standings. “Unfortunately, I’m working on limited information, but what I do know is, obviously, it’s way more important than anything we’re doing here today. Just thinking about him and his family… his career was obviously in a good spot, but that’s all on hold. Praying for the best is all we can do. “

The season had been going well for the Dust Devils. They are in third with a record of 59-67. But right now, it’s not the wins they’re focusing on; it’s the condition of the Angels’ young prospect, Rio Foster, that has created a worrisome situation.
