Anne Hathaway is a known Yankees fan. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her hometown roots might influence her affinity for the team. But it’s also true that the Bronx Bombers are undoubtedly one of the biggest franchises in MLB with a massive fan following. Although it is perfectly normal for the Academy Award-winning actress to share a selfie of herself wearing a Yankees hat on social media but fans do not seem to enjoy it.
A sizeable section of the fanbase became enraged and attacked the actress as soon as the photo went viral. Not to mention that she had an Arsenal team jersey underneath her Knicks jacket, which is associated with the basketball team. But why such unexpected backlash from the fans?
Well, as we all know, the Hollywood actress is a huge fan of sports. She is often found to display her love towards her favorite teams. However, her Yankees hat stole the show during her appearance at the New York Knicks vs. Detroit Pistons game, leaving the fans inconsolable. One of the fans even commented on the post, “That hat and that undershirt are gross.”

The “The Princess Diaries” star must be unaware of the backlash from the fans. However, for her, it’s all about the support that matters for the team the most. So, apparently, the fans are just mad because they don’t have the actress supporting their teams, maybe?
Well, there are other reasons as well why the fans do not like the Yankees. First of all, the New York Yankees haven’t won a single World Series title since 2009. But they always tend to act as an A-lister, with MLB showcasing Aaron Judge trying or breaking a record every now and then. But that’s not all!
Despite having the highest payroll for fifteen years, the Yankees never managed to become the highest-spending franchise in MLB. Additionally, because there is no salary cap, the Yankees have ample funds to outspend any other team at any time. The Yankees have won a number of championships and, more significantly, have regularly advanced to the postseason playoffs despite going 15 years without winning. They violate the parity level because they are a strong team that prevents others from winning.
Therefore, reasons are plenty to hate the Yankees; however, that doesn’t take away the legacy they had. Maybe that’s why Anne Hathaway’s gesture is the reason behind fans’ outrage.
What’s your perspective on:
Do fans have a right to criticize Anne Hathaway for her Yankees support, or is it overblown?

Anne Hathaway’s inclination towards the Yankees sends fans in a frenzy
Fans weren’t just made about the post made by Anne Hathaway. They were mad about everything that reflected a support for the Bronx Bombers. Apparently, MLB’s love affair with the Yankees has been going on longer than people’s marriages nowadays. “The @Yankees and @emirates are getting shilled pretty hard as well. She’s like a billboard.” True to some extent – both the Yankees and Arsenal hold great brand value and have a huge fan following. So, that’s a great way to endorse the teams and Hathaway didn’t disappoint either.

Then follows more criticism: “Take the ugly hat off and we’re good.” Clearly not satisfied with Hathaway donning the Yankees cap. Looks like they simply hate the Yankees for no reason. Due to a massive history of winning, fans have often developed a sense of entitlement, which might be why the fans are behaving in such a ridiculous manner.

Coming up with a similar statement, another fan wrote, “wrong hat tho,” seemingly not much concerned about the jersey and jacket. But not happy with the Yankee hat Hathaway is wearing.
“The fit makes no sense,” an X user wrote. But does that matter? Well, guess not, given the Yankees’ stadium always remains packed with thousands cheering for the New York Yankees and every now and then, a celebrity will cheer them too. Not just Anne Hathaway; there were other stars as well, including Adam Sandler, Jay-Z, Bruce Willis, and Robin Williams, who were also found to support the Yankees, no matter what.
“I knew I liked her for a reason!” A sensible comment finally. But going by the fan’s comment, he seems to be a Yankees fan who has supported the team in highs and lows and watching Hathaway donning the cap makes him more excited.

In sports, we sometimes judge too early. But we often forget that everyone has the freedom to make choices and support any team. It’s just that we need to be a little bit respectful towards others and let’s not take things for granted all the time. What do you think?
