A bright spot in their season has been Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ 22-year-old rookie. He has shown flashes of brilliant play at shortstop this year. Most recently, he shared some words of wisdom that his idol, Derek Jeter, told him before the season.

Volpe considers the legendary shortstop his icon. In fact, he recently listed his top favorite shortstops and Jeter topped the list. But these words from the Yankee legend truly helped the 22-year-old rookie, leaving him awestruck.

Anthony Volpe has had slight inconsistencies with his batting during his rookie season. But other than that, he has impressed with his fielding and base running. The 22-year-old, furthermore, seems mature beyond his years. Volpe has shown a humble personality and a hunger to improve. Most recently, the young prospect revealed that his icon, Derek Jeter, had a conversation with him before the season started. Yankees’ owner Hal Steinbrenner organized the call, and Jeter shared some encouraging words for the youngster. Volpe shared some of the details of the conversation with the New York Post.

According to New York Post’s Greg Joyce, Volpe said, “It was pretty awesome. Just the fact that they went out of their way to set it up and did it. Obviously talking to him was pretty amazing”. The rookie also shared Jeter’s advice for him, “Just play and have fun. Enjoy it and embrace it. [I’m] definitely trying to do that.”

This was a precious moment for Volpe, as he was able to converse with his biggest idol. Furthermore, Jeter took the time to give the 22-year-old some advice and have a short conversation with him. In fact, the team captain Aaron Judge even bought him a special gift earlier in the season.

Anthony Volpe has left a good impression on people within the Yankees organization. His work ethic and humble attitude have been particularly impressive. Team captain Aaron Judge has taken the youngster under his wing and helped him acclimatize to MLB life. Judge even bought Volpe a PS5, so that the two of them could bond over FIFA. This was a top move by the Yankees’ captain as he helped his rookie get comfortable.
