Anthony Volpe has grappled with a difficult regular season and an equally tough postseason. Meanwhile, the Yankees, who led the majors in scoring during the regular season, produced only six hits off multiple Blue Jays relievers in a 5-2 loss in front of a frustrated crowd of 47,823. Aaron Boone expressed his confidence about this team at the beginning of the postseason, saying the current core is as good as he had managed in his eight seasons at the helm.

And Anthony Volpe? After being publicly defended all season by Brian Cashman and Boone, he was a mere 1-for-15 at the plate with 11 strikeouts in the Yankees-Blue Jays series. This postseason, he has struck out 14 times in 24 plate appearances, the highest among all hitters.
He entered Wednesday’s game hitting just .217 with a .608 OPS, and now he’s hitting .192 in the playoffs with a 5-for-26 line.

With the Yankees trailing the Blue Jays 4-1, the 24-year-old shortstop was up to bat in the seventh inning. One fan, understandably so, hit his breaking point watching Volpe.

The fan, standing in the lower bowl, was captured in the FS1 broadcast. He was miming certain bat swings and pleaded to Anthony Volpe to get the offense going after he took two called strikes against the Blue Jays’ lefty Brendon Little. “Swing the f——g bat,” the fan yelled.
Eventually, Volpe did swing at the final pitch in the at-bat, waving and missing at a knuckle curve. It marked his third strikeout of the game. “Brutal, I’m kind of in shock,” he admitted after the Yankees got eliminated.
When he was on his way to the dugout, Volpe was rained with relentless boos. Naturally, fans were critical of Aaron Boone’s call to play him in Game 4. By the ninth inning, Boone sat him for pinch-hitter Jasson Dominguez. Yet, fans were baffled by his decision to stick with the struggling shortstop for eight innings in such a crucial game, the one that ended with the Yanks being done for 2025.
Fans have officially lost patience with Anthony Volpe
When the New York Yankees see their season come to an end, the front office will have some important roster decisions to make, especially at shortstop. The Bronx faithful have turned on Volpe after his continued struggles.
A fan frustratingly noted, “It’s really no wonder the Yankees are continuously f—— losers. Anthony Volpe has been horrible. But instead of playing someone who can give you more in a win-or-go-home game, we keep trotting out Volpe. They deserve to lose.” After posting a career-low .272 on-base percentage and performing as one of the most error-prone players in the American League, Anthony Volpe struggled massively in Game 3. In the regular season, the Yankees turned to José Caballero when the young shortstop led the league with the most errors.
In fact, even longtime New York Post insider Joel Sherman predicted Volpe would cede his spot as the Yankees’ starting shortstop to Caballero as the Yankees marched toward their 28th World Series title. However, Aaron Boone and Co. stuck with Volpe anyway.
Now, it all comes down to Aaron Boone and his decision-making. “If Anthony Volpe bats again in this game, it’s clear Aaron Boone would rather lose a season than a friendship,” another fan noted. Throughout the season, Boone was advised by multiple analysts that Volpe could benefit from some time in Triple-A. Yet, all Boone did was defend him constantly. “We want to send that guy down? What planet does that guy get sent down that’s a shortstop. I don’t know that planet!” – Boone shared in late August.
Despite his present struggles and boos, there was a time when Anthony Volpe was drawn in comparison to Derek Jeter. But it clearly didn’t age well. “The next ‘Jeter,’ Anthony Volpe, this postseason is 0-12 with 10 K’s. Atrocious.” Jeter is considered one of the best shortstops in the history of the game, let alone the Yankees. The weight of playing Jeter’s position in New York turns every error into an avalanche of criticism. Clearly, all the Jeter-Volpe comparisons done in the mid-season are now having ironic consequences.
Consequences? “Fire Aaron Boone. Trade Anthony Volpe.” This is exactly where Yankees fans are at right now. After the elimination, when Aaron Boone is asked if he has any reason to think he won’t be back next year as manager of the Yankees, he said, “No, I’m under contract.” And speaking of Anthony Volpe, his postseason slump has now reached historic lows.

And so, the majority responded with the same harshness. “This has to be Anthony Volpe’s last game as a Yankee. There’s no reason to keep him anymore.” Over his last three games, Volpe has gone 0-for-11 with nine strikeouts and no walks, making him the only player in Yankees history to record a three-game stretch in a single postseason with 9 or more strikeouts and zero hits.
So, what do you speculate will happen with Anthony Volpe this winter?
