Players often indulge in unique activities to relax their minds before crucial games. That’s a common scenario in every sport. So, baseball is no exception. From legends to rookies, baseball players often follow unique customs to find inspiration. A similar scenario unfolded in the Citizens Bank Park during the NLCS Game 7 between The Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks. Before taking the mound for the most crucial game of his life, the rookie pitcher of the D-Backs sought divine grace. His action ultimately proved to be a lucky charm for the team, leading them towards the World Series fight after 22 years.

Tuesday night’s game was a historic one in Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies appeared for the first time for an NLCS game 7 in their history. However, what attracted the attention more was the action of Brandon Pfaadt. To slow down his heartbeat, the rookie pitcher did some reading in the dugouts. Interestingly, he was reading the Bible.

Brandon debuted his MLB career in 2023. Despite his failure in the regular season with a 5.72 ERA, he made an unexpected comeback in the postseason. During the Wild Card series, he allowed three earned runs in just 2.2 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. Since then, the endeavor has been going on with a 2.13 ERA in his three starts, including the NLCS Game 7. While the tension was high as the last game would decide who would fight for the World Series this season, the rookie took to the Bible to find inspiration. However, this action finally proved as a lucky charm for the team and for the player as well.

While the Phillies were leading the game until the 4th inning, the Diamondbacks started turning it from the 5th innings onwards. Pfaadt struck out seven combined with five- scoreless innings. Another rookie player emerged gloriously to lead the team further. Corbin Carroll, with his two RBIs and two runs, changed the direction of the game. Later, in the seventh, Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte played their part well to lead the team to a 4-3 series win.

However, Pfaadt is not the only one who does unconventional things to relax his mind. Once, Derek Jeter shared about a weird pre-game habit for Roger Clemens to dominate the field.

Roger Clemens did not get friendly with hitters before games

Clemens was a renowned MLB pitcher with 7x Cy Young awards. However, legends also got tense before crucial games. But, interestingly, the former Yankees legend found a unique way to deal with it. As Derek Jeter once confirmed, Clemens never really talked to any other opposing hitter before All-Star games. Jeter pointed out, “He didn’t want to interact with the hitters because I think he wanted that intimidation factor. And it worked.”
