It was not too long back when MLB witnessed an Oakland Athletics outfielder scale the wall to take away what looked like a certain 407-foot home run. The incident occurred against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Toronto, on May 30. Now, a week and a half down the road, the same outfielder has done it again – this time against the Los Angeles Angels at Anaheim.
If you are still guessing, we are talking about Denzel Clarke, who has pulled off another stunning home run robbery in the MLB.
It all unfolded during the first inning when the Los Angeles Angels were chasing an early lead in the game. As Nolan Schanuel sent a Grant Holman splitter to dead center, Clarke ran back and timed his leap spectacularly well, soaring high above the wall to rob a potential home run.

As he landed back on the field, having pulled the ball back, the Canadian let out a huge roar. He probably exceeded his own expectations there. It was a remarkable catch, to say the least!
But while the catch was wonderful, the commentary on the official broadcast had it overshadowed. At least as per MLB nation. The entire attention turned to the Athletics’ announcers.

“Denzel Clarke on the move back after he stepped over and made another catch. Back-to-back weeks where he wins the electric play of the week, and he’s already on the leaderboard for this week.” The commentary made perfect sense of Clarke’s heroic catch and insane grab.
But it wasn’t the words that drew the backlash at announcers. It was, in fact, the delivery. The fans even demanded the Oakland Athletics revamp their announcers.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the announcers ruin Denzel Clarke's iconic catch, or are fans overreacting to the commentary?

No matter how it sounded though, nothing could take the gloss off Clarke’s catch. It was his 16th MLB game, and that catch marked one electric moment of his young career.
After the game, the 25-year-old himself opened up about what it meant to him. “I’m always very tentative to say this was the best one. But I think this is probably the best one I’ve ever made,” he said. Well, hard to disagree there!
Even though the Athletics lost to the Angels by 7-4, that catch must be one of the best in the recent history of baseball. Yet, some couldn’t get over the commentary on it.
MLB fans slam Athletics’ announcers for ruining Denzel Clarke’s moment
Clarke’s catch was hailed by many as the catch of the year. The clip took over the internet, leaving fans stunned. His leap to the wall and the incredible grab were collectively praised by all. But more than the play, it was actually the fans’ frustration towards commentary that spammed the comment section of MLB’s post on Instagram.
In a nutshell, it was downright annoying to many. “Timmy Turner ruined the clip with that call,” wrote a fan. Apparently, the fan compared the announcer’s voice to Timmy Turner’s voice. It’s a high-pitched tone character from the Fairly OddParents cartoon on Nickelodeon. According to many, the announcer had a squeaky voice that ruined Clarke’s iconic catch moment.
The fans didn’t hold back as they expressed how jarring the commentary was. “One of the greatest catches ever, completely ruined by the squealer who somehow has a job commentating,” wrote another fan. The energy on the booth and Athletics’ outfielder Clarke’s intensity on the field felt mismatched. Fans urged the Athletics to change up the announcers. Well, a bit harsh maybe!

Quite a few fans felt that the announcers’ voice was more cartoonish and comedic than anything else. “Why does it sound like some Nickelodeon character is commentating?” one fan wrote. Clarke was climbing the wall and pulling off arguably the best home run robbery in MLB’s recent history. So, the commentary had to deliver the moment perfectly. But the way it was delivered, it shifted the tone of the moment, and that’s what went frustrating for the fans.
Home run robberies are always intense, and what makes it even better is the announcer matching the intensity of the moment. But when it’s not up to the billing, fans have their own ways of criticizing, at times with a touch of sarcasm. “Never seen a home robbery that was better while muted,” a netizen chimed in. The catch was praised, but this fan attached the warning for others to mute the clip while celebrating Clarke’s catch.
Another fan seemed less than pleased with the commentary, as they wrote, “Wish the commentator was better, but wow, that’s an amazing catch.” Well, had the announcer delivered the call better and more subtly, it would have been a cherry on top. Nonetheless, Clarke’s athleticism hit the right mark.

Even though the Oakland Athletics lost the game, Clarke’s catch is making more headlines than the Angels’ 7-4 win. It’s understandable when the catch is as legendary as that, but hey, the calling had to be better there!
