It was early August 2022 when the San Diego Padres signed off on the deal with the young sensation, Juan Soto. The high-profile deal involved Soto’s move to San Diego from the Washington Nationals and was anticipated to be a significant one. But it didn’t quite go their way. In the aftermath of a disappointing 2023 season, the Padres seem to have a lot on the plate. With a potential financial crunch coming their way, it appears they are willing to let Soto go.

This has led to a market of speculation as to where Soto could be headed next. The speculations are abuzz, with teams like the New York Yankees and Mets being interested in Soto, which has been making the rounds of news as of late. But there’s one team that hasn’t been a part of this discussion.

The Arizona Diamondbacks might be interested in Soto

With the 2023 World Series hanging in the balance, anything can happen in the remaining games. But one of these teams seems to have an eye on the future as well, and that team is the Arizona Diamondbacks. While discussing the “best potential landing sports for Juan Soto”, the former Major League Baseball left fielder and analyst from the MLB Network, Cliff Floyd, said the Snakes are in contention.

Cliff ranked the potential suitors for Juan Soto in the trade market as follows: Yankees at the top, followed by the Diamondbacks, and then the Seattle Mariners. Floyd gave his reasoning behind the choices. As the D-Backs have taken the world by storm by entering the World Series, it makes complete sense to have their name on the list of suitors.

The D-Backs, as they are called, have tasted success as of late. They have shown themselves to be a quality, spirited outfit willing and able to achieve more than what is expected of them. But now, already in the finals, the Phoenix-based team will have a reputation to maintain and a fan base that will expect even more from them. Therefore, it makes sense for them to be vying for the Dominican slugger.

For a team hoping to be regular playoff contenders, having a talented player like Juan Soto among their ranks makes perfect sense. But with many other teams in contention, including the ones with famous names, deeper pockets, and glorified histories, it will be an uphill challenge for the D-Backs. However, there’s one more thing that the team might be concerned about.

The Arizona’s past of poor signings

There have been occasions in the past where the Diamondbacks have made significant moves to acquire new talent, but it hasn’t really worked out well for them. For instance, in 2007, they acquired the pitcher Dan Haren. However, the team missed the playoffs in the subsequent three seasons. Even in 2016, the Diamondbacks made headlines by acquiring Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller. However, as soon as they arrived in Phoenix, their performance wasn’t up to the mark, and the Snakes had to face another disappointing season.
