Are the Astros making space for Alex Bregman? Looks like it. The whole Bregman scenario has been exhausting for both the team and the players. Alex Bregman thinks he is worth much more than what his former team is offering but the Astros are pretty adamant on what they put on the table.

With just eight days left until pitchers and catchers report to spring training, the clock is ticking, and yet, Alex Bregman’s free agency remains in limbo. It’s been 93 days since the market officially opened, and despite his clear desire to stay in Houston — and the Astros echoing that sentiment — there’s been no movement toward a reunion since the initial six-year, $156 million offer was put on the table back in November.

Astros might be making space for Alex Bregman

With a new video that just came into light, it seems like that reunion is far after all. The Astros writer and insider Michael Schwab wrote on X, “This is from this morning, I was told. But it shows Jose Altuve getting reps in left field. Very interesting.” The video of Jose Altuve getting reps in left field definitely raises some eyebrows, especially considering that the Astros have been linked to trying to make room for Bregman.

If they’re willing to move their All-Star second baseman out to left field, it suggests they might be making a serious play to clear space for Isaac Paredes at second base, while also leaving the door open for Bregman to return and play third.

What makes this even more interesting is that Altuve is an established leader in Houston, and for the Astros to consider moving him out of his natural position shows just how much they value Bregman. It’s essentially them saying, “We want you back, and we’ll make the adjustments to keep our core intact.”

That’s some serious maneuvering for a player they’re still waiting to commit to. Bregman’s camp now knows Houston is not just waiting around — they’re actively making room. But will this kind of flexibility be enough to sway him into accepting the Astros’ offer? Or is he still holding out for a bigger deal elsewhere?

Two suitors offering very different paths for the All-Star third baseman.

Offering a large deal and the opportunity to work with former Astros manager A.J. Hinch again, the Detroit Tigers are making a strong push. The Tigers may be setting themselves up as Bregman’s long-term home because they have made it obvious that they are still working to improve their squad, particularly in the lineup and bullpen. Another strong contender is Boston.

The Chicago Cubs, the perennial wild card, continue to loom large. In a recent interview, Pressly expressed his wish to play with Bregman once more. The 30-year-old’s presence in any locker room is obviously highly desired, and if his goal is to maximize his worth over the next few years, a short-term deal could make sense for both parties given the Cubs’ recent success.

Bregman’s camp now has to decide between cashing in with a rebuilding team like Detroit, shifting positions in Boston with a contender, or finding a way back to Houston — where his heart might be, but where the money hasn’t been quite right. Both sides will need to make a move soon, and the final decision could come down to who blinks first. What do you think — will the New Mexico native stay with the Astros, or will he chase the money and opportunity elsewhere?
