On July 9, 2011, Derek Jeter smashed his 3,000th career hit, which was a home run off the Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price. Jeter finished that day with five hits in his five at-bats, with the last hit being a game-winning one. But for his then-girlfriend Minka Kelly, “hits,” “home runs,” and “runs” were interchangeable terms, and prior to this historic moment for Jeter, Kelly made a revelation that probably stunned every Jeter and baseball fan.

In a documentary shot by HBO, recording Jeter’s journey to 3,000 hits, Minka Kelly revealed that she barely knew anything about baseball or Jeter before she met the Yankee. In fact, she couldn’t even tell the difference between a run and a home run.

In the documentary, Minka Kelly revealed, “When I met Derek, I didn’t know anything about baseball, at all.”

Notably, the couple dated from 2008 to 2011. During this duration, there were also rumors about their engagement. Minka, who is known for her role in Charlie’s Angels, continued to explain her absent baseball knowledge, by adding, “I mean, I didn’t know the difference between a run and a home run. I thought, if you made a connection with the ball, that was an automatic hit.”

Jeter responded to Minka’s lack of baseball knowledge by hilariously adding, “So I’d come home, and she’d be happy, and say ‘you got four hits’. And I’m like ‘what are you talking about?'”
