No matter how bad the Yankees fans want their skipper gone, the front office will never sack Aaron Boone based on fans’ sentiment. At least, that’s how legendary Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay sees it. Back in the first week of August, when the Yankees were swept by the Marlins during a 5-game losing streak, calls to fire Boone were at their loudest. Even then, the Brian Cashman-led front office stayed firm and continued to back their manager.

Now, 6 weeks later, when the Yankees have successfully secured their postseason berth, Kay has opened up on the circumstances under which Hal Steinbrenner might part ways with Aaron Boone. When talking about the fans’ sentiment, Kay made it loud and clear that the front office is “not gonna listen to talk radio and hear, you know, Yankees fans call into me and go ‘Boone should be fired.’ If Boone gets fired, they will fire him on their own time on something that they feel that he did wrong. Not because the fans don’t like him.”

He further added that a team should never run by the fans’ wishes, regardless of their harsh criticism. I don’t agree that the teams should be run by the wishes of fans. I think fans should obviously be embraced; they are important. They are the lifeblood of an organization. But the old saying is sports is ‘if you listen to the fans, you are going to end up sitting with them,'” Kay added. And he is not wrong.

Despite the constant criticism, Boone has almost always delivered for the Yanks. Even last year, when there was no hope from the Bronx Bombers at one point, it was Boone who led the team to a World Series appearance and ended a 15-year drought. Under Boone’s leadership, the Yankees have never missed the October baseball.

Even with the limited availability of his best hitters, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, because of their respective injuries, Boone managed his team with ease. So, Key does not see a point in why the Yankees should fire Boone in the middle of a season. The veteran announcer also pointed out the unfair criticism of Anthony Volpe, who has been playing with pain this season.

You must know by now that Volpe wasn’t in the lineup in the Yankees’ Friday series opener with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The 24-year-old was resting his ailing shoulder after a cortisone shot. Since May, when the injury first surfaced, Boone has been deciding how much or how little playing time Volpe would get.

That stance has left Boone shouldering the scrutiny for Volpe’s rough stretch. However, Kay laid out that Yankees’ fans will feel vindicated no matter the outcome. They are already convinced the process itself is flawed. Yet, that doesn’t mean the Yankees will bend to fan sentiments. “Fans voice is gonna eventually reach Anthony Volpe,” Kay added.

Leading the American League with 19 errors, Anthony Volpe has been reminded of it game after game. As of now, Boone is hopeful for Volpe’s speedy recovery. Only time will tell whether Boone’s trust in his shortstop will silence the loud fans.
