Barry Bonds Once Revealed How His “Famous” Father Almost Killed His MLB Dream

Well, Barry Bonds wasn’t the only member of the Bonds family that didn’t find his way to the MLB World Championship. In fact, if anything, Bonds was not the first, but the second member of his family to enter the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame. Yes! Bobby Bonds, Barry Bonds’ father, made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants in 1968.

However, Barry’s baseball inspiration wasn’t triggered by his father’s successful journey in the ballpark. In reality, Bobby Bonds’ success in the ballpark almost derailed his son’s entry to the park. And in ESPN’s Bonds on Bonds documentary that aired in 2006, Barry spoke about the implications that traveled with his famous father, and how it almost drove him away from baseball.

How did Barry Bonds’ father drive him away from baseball?

In the 2006 released documentary, the 14-time All-Star Barry Bonds discussed the cons of having a famous father, and how it set extremely high expectations. Moreover, he spoke about the precarious need to not do what his father did, and how he considered his decision against baseball, for the same.

The seven-time NL MVP said, “I had a problem. I had a famous father. I didn’t want to play baseball because I didn’t want to do the same thing my father did. And that was a lot to have to do with the two because I a lackadaisical attitude all the time.”

Notably, the Giants’ legend father was never as successful as him, who concluded his MLB career with 762 home runs, more than two times greater than his father, who hit 332 homers. But in all fairness, Bobby Bonds probably never took steroids either.

How good was Bobby Bonds?

Unlike the 14 All-Star appearances that Barry Bonds made, Bobby Bonds made it to only 3 All-Star games in his career, which spread from 1968 to 1981. The outfielder spent seven seasons with the SF Giants before he finally moved to the New York Yankees for a year and eventually played for six other MLB teams. The absence of a World Championship Ring was the distinct similarity that existed between his and his son’s careers. Ultimately, he concluded his career with three Golden Gloves And as a member of the SFGiants Wall of Fame.
