Spending his entire career in New York, Derek Jeter held a soft spot in the heart of every New Yorker. As a result, all his achievements and accolades became a habit of celebration across the Bronx. And amongst these, one of his most memorialized accomplishments was when he managed his 3,000th hit in 2011.

HBO shot a documentary, “Derek Jeter 3K,” surrounding the Pinstripe captain’s glorious accomplishment. And his journey toward the 3,000th hit against the Tampa Bay Rays. During the documentary, billionaire American rapper Jay-Z also made an appearance. The Manhattan-born rapper visited the ballpark to celebrate the shortstop touching the 3,000-hit plateau. But despite being a renowned figure, even Jay-Z had to wait to meet the Yankees superstar.

As is visible at 54:40 in the documentary; many people gathered to applaud Jeter’s stunning and landmark achievement. Amongst this long list of people was rapper Jay-Z. The narration in the documentary says, “Everyone was happy to wait their turn to offer congratulations [to Derek Jeter]. Even fellow superstars like Jay-Z.”

After leaving the room and meeting Jay-Z, the rapper hugged Jeter and flattered him with a compliment. Jay-Z said, “Congratulations, man! And what a way to do it, too.” Shortly before leaving, Jeter asked Jay-Z whether he was going to wait there: “Are you guys going to wait here, man?”
This stands as just one mere instance that evoked the legacy Derek Jeter left behind.

2017, the Yankees unanimously decided to retire Jeter’s jersey number two and added a name with his plaque to Monument Park. As expected, in 2020, Jeter made his way to the MLB Hall of Fame with a record 99.75% majority.
Jeter fit the sample of an ideal New Yorker, who represented the entire craze and arrogance behind the Yankees’ support. He left behind a legacy that will be hard to match and replace in the coming years.
