It’s March 6, and two of Scott Boras’ chief clients are still free agents. One has to say that even for Boras, things are getting a little out of hand. Blake Snell and fellow client Jordan Montgomery are currently going through similar struggles, albeit with differing issues. However, this has given rise to a fresh worry – could these two stars negatively affect each other’s market?

One usually turns off the friendly fire mode when playing video games, but this is real life. Could the limited market lead to Snell and Montgomery eating into each other’s suitors? Or is there a chance for both of them to get a good deal out of this ordeal?

Until a few days ago, both Snell and Monty had clear favorites. There was the New York Yankees, who looked like an eligible candidate for Snell, while a reunion with the Texas Rangers looked to be the destiny of Monty. However, things took a U-turn, and now they’re back to square one. But fresh injury troubles of various teams may have opened the doors for the Boras stars.

According to ESPN, Scott Boras said on Monday that just in the past week, “four new teams” have inquired about Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. “There is a pitching panic going on in baseball. We’ve got so many starting pitchers that are now compromised…And the calls for elite starters are starting to increase,” Boras shared. Although it’s positive news, we can’t help but question whether this is yet another one of Boras’ tactics.

Until now, there haven’t been concrete links for his clients. The issue is possibly their age and demands. At 31, they both aren’t fountains of youth anymore. Add to that, the recent injuries to other older pitchers have shown that longevity isn’t guaranteed in baseball. So, with both of them possibly having the same issues, their market looks similar. So it isn’t too far-fetched to wonder if they will see-saw their market value.

It becomes especially true if one notices how signing Snell could prove to be a disadvantage to teams – something that makes Montgomery more attractive.

The loss of the draft pick and Monty’s attractiveness

Snell had rejected a qualifying offer from the San Diego Padres. As a result, whichever team signs him will have to let go at least one of their draft picks. It was one reason why the Yankees reportedly pulled out of a short-term deal. Similarly, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Philadelphia Phillies “have never seriously discussed” signing Snell because of this draft situation.

Could this affect Snell’s market? It possibly can. On the other hand, Monty doesn’t come with such baggage, so he is instantly a more attractive short-term signing. Now the question is – when will Boras reveal those four teams he was talking about? The clock is ticking rather quickly now.
