The Blue Jays have shown interest in keeping Bo Bichette. The team’s GM Ross Atkins revealed in front of reporters that re-signing Bichette is their top priority. The star is an elite offensive shortstop and constantly delivers strong performances. However, there is a twist in the tale.

Insider Anthony McCarron predicted that, “they would sign Bo Bichette from the Blue Jays to play second base. He’s a shortstop by trade, but I don’t think defensively he can handle that position anymore”. That “they” McCarron is referencing is the New York Mets. The insider’s statement quickly created a debate related to where the Mets actually could get the star.
For the Mets, signing Bo Bichette is not just about defense, it is about filling a glaring hole in the lineup. If Pete Alonso leaves, then New York needs a new middle-order hitter who can deliver consistently. Bo, with a .311 average and 181 hits, which is second most in the league, in 2025, perfectly fits in that description. At 27, he is younger than Alonso, more contact-oriented, and matched with David Stearns’ focus on “run prevention.” The Mets’ lineup can be completely revitalized due to his ability to get on base and produce in critical situations. If New York makes this move, it could signal a bold new era in Queens.

Now coming back to McCarron’s statement, “I don’t think defensively he can handle that position anymore.” Bichette’s declining defensive matrix perfectly backs the prediction. In 2025, his -12 defensive runs saved and his OAA metrics ranked him at the bottom. Also, his 12% bat speed shows his steady sprint speed decline.
Triggering more guesswork, the Mets might explore trading Jeff McNeil in an effort to rebuild the lineup. After last season’s disappointment, the team’s front office desperately wants a cultural shift within the team. Another theory suggests that the Mets might think of trading Jeff McNeil and allowing Pete Alonso to be a free agent if he does not agree to the team-friendly deal.
McNeil, 33, has one year and 15.75 million left on his deal, with a club option for 2027. He had a pretty good season with a .243 batting average and, .746 OPS in 122 games. But if New York chooses to move on them, it would open the door to second base, making McCarron’s prediction regarding Bo even more presumable. After missing the playoffs, placing Bichette at second or third base with Francisco Lindor at shortstop would be an offensive upgrade for the franchise.

Now, Toronto faces growing uncertainty over Bo Bichette’s future amid Mets interest. Another story has started to unfold, one that could completely redefine the Jays’ offseason plan.

Bob Nightengale predicts Blue Jays to land $400M superstar and All-Star pitcher in blockbuster free agency splash
Following the Toronto Blue Jays’ heartbreaking championship loss, they are about to make one of the boldest offseason moves in the history of the franchise. According to Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY’s MLB insider, the Jays might be close to signing major free agents Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez. Bob defined Tucker as “widely considered the best player on the free agent market,” forecasting the four-time All-Star to get a deal worth around 400 million. Tucker, who slashed .266 with 22 homers, 25 stolen bases and 73 RBIs in 2025, would provide the Jays another elite bat, together with Anthony Santander and Daulton Varsho.
But the story does not end here. Nightengale also thought that the Blue Jays could sign Astros pitcher Framber Valdez to strengthen their starting rotation. Veteran players such as Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer are expected to leave. Valdez, who went 13–11 last season with a 3.66 ERA and 186 strikeouts, could serve as a central pillar along with José Berríos and Kevin Gausman. The left-hander is expected to sign a six-year deal of between 170 to 190 million, pointing out that the Jays are all set to spend big to chase their championship sprint in 2026.
