Towering home runs define his game. He has been a central figure of his team’s recent resurgence, a key component of thrilling playoff pushes. But as his contract ticks down after the 2025 season, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over this premier slugger’s future. While he seems happy where he is, stalled extension talks have rival front offices dreaming.
Yes, we’re talking about Kyle Schwarber. He continues to prove his immense value as his contract year unfolds. Just recently, on April 30th, against the Washington Nationals, he delivered a game-changing blow. Schwarber hit a massive three-run homer, his ninth already this season, and it sent the Phillies to a 7-2 win. That win was the team’s fourth in a row. Over his last five games entering May, he boasted a .375 average with six hits and four RBI.
In spite of all of this star power, Schwarber’s future in Philadelphia after 2025 is uncertain. His four-year, $79 million contract, signed before the 2022 season, is nearing its end. According to MLB Insider Robert Murray of Fansided, there is currently “no evidence” the Phillies have seriously approached Schwarber about a potential extension. Murray reported that the most likely scenario involves Schwarber hitting free agency this offseason. He even suggested it’s a “big mistake” that the Phillies haven’t ignited meaningful extension talks yet, as other big names on the roster like J.T. Realmuto and Ranger Suárez await their next deals as well.

This scenario could lead to an opportunity for potential suitors, and a team north of the border appears to be the perfect match. Newsweek’s Hunter Mulholland points out Toronto’s recent history, noting, “The Toronto Blue Jays have missed out on plenty of high-value free agents the past two seasons, and with their link to Pete Alonso last winter, Schwarber may be at the top of their list to bring north of the border.” That indicates Toronto is actively looking for impact bats.
Phillies star Schwarber’s next move: A winter to watch
The addition of Schwarber makes considerable sense for the Blue Jays’ roster. A regular, middle-of-the-order, left-handed power threat is certainly a need in Toronto at DH. Schwarber would offer a dangerous complement to right-handed superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr in the middle of the order. Toronto reportedly made a strong push to sign Schwarber before he picked Philadelphia in 2022. And who doesn’t understand that the current roster of Vladimir Guerrero Jr (1B), Alejandro Kirk (C), Andrés Giménez (2B), and a solid starting rotation (Gausman, Berríos, Bassitt) will certainly get the benefit from a consistent left-handed DH.

So why, then, have the Phillies not yet secured their slugger? Factors like Schwarber turning 33 next season and being limited to the DH role appear to be a factor. Philadelphia might explore internal options if he departs. Nick Castellanos could potentially shift to DH, opening outfield spots for younger players like Brandon Marsh or the speedy Johan Rojas. There are some promising talents, such as Justin Crawford and Dante Nori, deeper in the system as well. But replacing the 40+ homer potential of Schwarber is a tall task.
For his part, Schwarber hasn’t closed the door on returning. He recently stated, “There is interest on my side,” in an extension with the Phillies. It’s worth noting that his power production actually surged after arriving in Philadelphia; he surpassed 40 home runs in a season for the first time in 2022 and followed with 47 in 2023. His improved batting average in 2024 and early 2025 further strengthens his case, showing he can be more than just an all-or-nothing slugger.
The Phillies actually began 2025 well, going 17-13 through May 2nd. They remain very much in the mix in the NL East, relying heavily on their veteran core, including Schwarber, to carry them. However, the uncertainty about his contract will place added interest as the season unfolds. His performance continues to demand attention, both in Philadelphia and potentially from front offices elsewhere.
