One Blue Jays star wasn’t going to let the moment pass without saying something, because beating your rivals on their home turf is a special kind of satisfaction. After Toronto beat New York 34-19 in four ALDS games, Kevin Gausman took to social media to celebrate the win that has brought back hopes of winning the championship.

The $110 million pitcher wasn’t shy about enjoying the win. “Good morning, Blue Jays fans!! Sun is shining a little brighter today…….. make that a whole lot brighter #NeedElectrolites.” Gausman did what he needed to do when it counted, winning his only postseason game with a 1.59 ERA and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. His performance anchored a rotation that now includes him, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber.

The ALDS matchup was not even close. The Blue Jays and Yankees both finished the regular season with a record of 94-68, but Toronto went 8-5 there against New York. With ruthless efficiency in the playoffs, they won the AL East title, defeating the Bronx in three games in the ALDS best-of-five.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit three home runs, which was almost as many as the whole Yankees team, which hit four. In the end, the whole series felt way too one-sided.

And Kevin Gausman’s tweet celebrating the moment perfectly captured the mood in the franchise.

Now, the Blue Jays need to win four more games to make it to the World Series for the first time since 1993.

On Sunday, Toronto will play either Detroit or Seattle in Game 1 of the ALCS. This will be their first championship series since 2016. And this achievement doesn’t come just from star power. Nathan Lukes, Ernie Clement, and Daulton Varsho all contributed to being the winning team. Toronto finally has a full roster to end the 32-year drought.

But the “Superman” without a cape might be the main reason this team is in the playoffs. His game against the Yankees showed why Toronto thought he would be the key to their championship hopes.

Blue Jays’ Guerrero Jr. proves his worth

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. showed Toronto why they spent $500 million on his future. The franchise cornerstone led the Blue Jays to the ALCS with a performance that changed the history of the division series. Guerrero set a record for postseason dominance by becoming the first in MLB to get nine hits and nine RBIs in a single division series. But those numbers only tell part of the story.

When your star player hits three home runs in a row, the game changes. Guerrero’s presence changes the lineup. His teammates feel more sure of themselves because they know the game’s most dangerous hitter is looking out for them. That effect goes beyond the box score to the energy in the dugout and the faith in the clubhouse.

Even after their Game 3 loss against the Yanks, the moment of the game would probably be Vladdy’s base-running headfirst dive.

After Game 4, Guerrero was overwhelmed by the size of the moment. He was born in Montreal and spent most of his life playing baseball for Canada on the biggest stage. That duty is a lot of pressure for any athlete, but Guerrero takes it on. Every time he steps up to the plate, he carries the hopes of an entire nation.
