If there is one simple golden rule in baseball fandom, it is this—you don’t cross enemy lines. And when the rivalry is as big as the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, even a little nudge means a big thing. But even then, Jimmy Fallon just got caught doing exactly this.

The Tonight Show host, who once sold himself as a Red Sox fan thanks to his role in Fever Pitch, was spotted at Yankee Stadium. And he was spotted cheering like he had pinstripes stitched to his DNA from forever.

The sheer sight of Fallon jumping up and down for New York set social media on fire, and Red Sox fans who still remember him screaming, “The Red Sox have won the World Series; it’s true, it’s happening,” let it be known that they are not happy with this switching of loyalty.

But here is the kicker—Fallon has been a Yankee fan all along! His Boston Red Sox fandom seems to be born out of necessity and not passion. Back in 2005, when he starred in Fever Pitch, a rom-com where he played Ben, an obsessed Boston Red Sox fan. Since filming took place at Fenway, he had to immerse himself in the role and even attended the real games to be in character. Red Sox Nation might just have mistaken him!

On The Breakfast Club one time, Fallon did admit that he was not really a Red Sox fan, saying, “No, I am, but no. I played one in a movie,” he clarified. And well, Derek Jeter and Fallon are old friends, and Jeter and even Aaron Judge, for the matter, have been spotted in his show as well and multiple times. Now, given that his cheering for the Yankees still upsets the Boston fans, it makes it seem like he sure acted like a million dollars. And they have not taken this support from him towards their arch nemesis lightly.

Boston Red Sox fans blast Jimmy Fallon

Finding it hard to believe, one user said, “Why is Jimmy Fallon jumping for joy at the Yankees?” This is because Boston fans remember Fallon and Barrymore being brought into the field at Busch Stadium after the Red Sox won the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. He looked over the moon to be celebrating Boston’s win. And now all that seems like a sham to fans as he stands celebrating pinstripes.

Echoing the same sentiment of disbelief, one user said, “Jimmy Fallon is a Red Sox fan, and he will not fool me cheering for the Yankees tonight.” And if you think about why it is so tough to believe for Red Sox fans that he is not their fan, it’s because of not just one instance cited above where Fallon has shown his support. He was also a part of the recurring Boston Teens sketches during his time on SNL. He sure was aware of the power that Boston had on the region by the time his “Fever Pitch” hit the screens.

A brutal jab by a fan saying, “Jimmy Fallon somehow flip-flopping between being a Yankees fan tonight sitting behind home plate and being a Red Sox fan is confirmation he’s just fake overall.” And this is not just one comment, but plenty saying the same. However, Fallon being a Yankee supporter is not a deep, dark secret. He has attended several games at Yankee Stadium, and he has supported them openly. Jimmy Fallon even threw out the first pitch at the stadium, and it’s a badge of honor that’s reserved for fans and celebrities with a connection to the team. This was on September 21 of 2021.

Stating what seems to be obvious to him, one user said, “The fact I just saw Jimmy Fallon cheering for the Yankees vs. the Red Sox—what about the movie Fever Pitch? He can’t do that!!” And the kicker is that it’s not just Boston fans who feel the pinch of betrayal; even the New York Yankees fans do. The fact that a Yankee fan can go about and feature in a movie from a rival team makes them feel Fallon is not even a true Yankee.

Bringing a little humor, one user said, “Do you mean Jimmy Fallon is really a Yankees fan? Does Drew Barrymore know?” And well, they both were the ones who were pretty convincing in their act. Fallon and Drew Barrymore even kissed while in the stadium, and well, that added another layer, though cheesy, to this entire drama. Fallon, moreover, was seen attending the Boston Red Sox events and even catching up with fans. But maybe all that was an act after all!
