The free agency of Jordan Montgomery is finally making some noise. After two months of relative silence, more and more teams are entering into the Monty business. The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers are already looking for a reunion but it looks like a certain Boston franchise might be getting ready to make a grand entry to the mix.

The 2023 World Series winner has discovered a previously unseen swagger since parting ways with the Yankees. With his performances at an all-time high, there’s a market frenzy for Montgomery. The question is, do the Boston Red Sox have funds to sign Monty?

Jordan Montgomery – the most wanted man

When the Cy Young winner Blake Snell and World Series winner Jordan Montgomery entered free agency, nobody would’ve predicted that Monty would be the one with a larger market. But that’s exactly what’s happened here. Due to his scary consistency and growth, Montgomery is fast emerging as the top pitching free agent in the market. While the Yankees and Rangers are looking for a reunion, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, even the Boston Red Sox are ready to battle it out for Monty.

“I would also mention the Boston Red Sox, we saw they were able to get Lucas Giolito but they also traded Chris Sale. So at one point they may want to add one more left handed arm to that rotation. Because right now they’re a very right handed dominant staff.” Morosi said.

Morosi took notice of the right-handed dominance in the Red Sox lineup and it’s true. With the sale of Chris Sale, the starting lineup of the Red Sox lacks any strong left-handed pitcher in it. As a result, Montgomery might fit perfectly in their squad. Unlike the Rangers or Yankees, the BoSox can give Monty a bigger role due to the acute shortage of quality pitchers in their lineup.

But still, the link isn’t a done deal yet, especially with the Yankees and Rangers in the mix. But there’s another worry for the Red Sox.

Yankees, Rangers, and the budget issue of the Red Sox

A few days ago, Masslive.com’s Chris Cotillo revealed that the Red Sox have told at least one free agent that they’re looking to reduce their payroll before pursuing any other free agent. This issue, coupled with the Yankees and Rangers’ aggressive pursuit, makes this an interesting situation.

The Red Sox’s payroll is slightly over $200 million. Theoretically, the BoSox can add Montgomery’s salary and still stay under the taxation threshold. But the team doesn’t have much appetite for it, even in 2023 they stayed below the $233 million threshold.

So it remains to be seen whether Montgomery will have a homecoming, a reunion, or enter a whole new place altogether.
