After disastrous 2022 and 2023, this season was supposed to be Alex Cora’s swansong. It was be thought as being a year that finally gives him relief from the Red Sox circus. But then, in his typical style, Cora decided to overperform. With proper help from the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles’ bad form – the skipper has put the Boston Red Sox right amid a playoff run. So is it surprising that the BoSox have done everything in their power to extend their skipper’s stay?

According to New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Boston Red Sox and Alex Cora have renewed their relationship for 3-years $21 million. This is another huge contract for a manager right after the Chicago Cubs gave Craig Counsell a 5-year $40 million deal. As a result, Cora will be receiving $7 million per year. With a 54-47 record, the Boston Red Sox are currently third in the AL East and slowly climbing atop the AL Wild Card Spot. More than that they’re just six games behind the Baltimore Orioles. That is a testament to Cora’s ability – he has managed to do this without a competitive payroll. But that doesn’t mean that this renewal was expected.

It is still a surprising development, especially because had he entered the market – he would’ve created a massive competition for himself. But now, it looks like he had something else in his mind too.
