The Yankees have consistently failed to achieve their annual goal to win the World Series despite establishing themselves as one of the league’s most talented rosters. “We’re the best team in the league,” said Jazz Chisholm Jr. after the Yankees’ back-to-back wins at Fenway Park last night. After being outscored 23-3 over two brutal games by the Detroit Tigers earlier in the week, the Yankees looked for a comeback win, and they found it. Before the 5-3 win at Fenway, Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman opened up all about roster moves, Boone’s role, and the mood in the front office during a walk and talk with YES Network.

When asked how it feels this time of the season for him and the front office, he replied, “Same as all our fans, very hopeful and stressful at the same time. You know, this has got a lot of exciting opportunities right there for us. And we just got to be, hopefully, up for the challenge, and I think they are.” That’s the same stance many in the clubhouse had after the win, including Luke Weaver and Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Until now and even moving forward, the lineup decisions are on a “day-to-day mode” in the hands of manager Aaron Boone, as Cashman said in the same interview, “At this stage, Booney is putting up whoever he thinks is the best lineup based on who’s on the mound.”

That being said, Cashman further stated the ultimate stance amid rising pressure on the decision-makers. “Now’s the time to shine, because you got to find your stride at the most important time, and because October’s coming soon, and we want to be that last team standing.” For now, Cashman’s biggest worry is simply if the Yankees don’t play at the best of their abilities in all categories.

He stressed that roster-wise, the team is really talented and he’s confident in this precisely curated roster right now. Across the last ten games, they’ve gone 6-4 with a .237 batting average and a 5.16 ERA. In the latest game, it was Aaron Judge’s power surge and Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s energy that provided the Yankees with a much-needed spark. Chisholm had hit a soft single that brought in a run in the first inning and later in the third. Then, when he hit another single through the left side of the infield, it helped to bring Judge home.

What Cashman, however, didn’t address was the Yankees’ bullpen situation. In the previous series against the Tigers, relievers Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. gave up nine runs in just one inning. That alone turned a 2-2 tie into a 12-2 meltdown. Despite David Bednar’s reliability that helped the Yankees in Boston series, doubts still linger if team’s relief corps will be able to help in remaining games. As bad as the bullpen performs, it will just deteriorate the Yankees’ chances to close games on a winning note. Now they look to keep their winning streak alive for Sunday’s game against the Red Sox.

What’s next for the Yankees in the AL East race?

The Yankees will conclude the tough 12-game stretch against current AL playoff teams on Sunday. By then, they’d have wrapped up their regular season games against Boston, Detroit, Houston, and Toronto. Either way, they’ll end up with a winning record at least. Despite the fact that they’ve played well in recent games, it won’t be that easy moving forward.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Yankees' bullpen woes be fixed in time, or is another October disappointment looming?

FanGraphs says that the Bronx Bombers have a 16.1% chance to overpower the Blue Jays with a 14-game window. Just in case they finish 10-4 in the remaining games, the Blue Jays have to finish 7-7. That is because they have a tiebreaker over the Yankees.

Each game the Yankees surrender will bring the Blue Jays one step closer to notching their first division title since 2015. And by any chance the Yankees fail to surpass the Blue Jays in the AL standings, they will host a wild-card matchup at Yankee Stadium.

If the Blue Jays keep stacking wins and maintain a stellar record in the American League, the Yankees head to Toronto for the beginning of the AL division series. If Boone’s roster plays well consistently over the next games, Cashman and company won’t have to eat their own words later.
