You might be surprised (or not) when you hear Brian Cashman’s take on Aaron Boone’s future in New York. If you ask Cashman, Aaron Boone “would get a job rather quickly” if he were to become a free agent this fall. He sees no drop in Boone’s commitment or preparation with the team. And Boone himself? While reflecting on his elusive pursuit of a world championship ring, he said, “I’ve been chasing it my whole life.’’ Now that Boone is returning for the 2026 campaign following a rough year, it’s only natural to wonder why Cashman made this call.

WFAN’s Evan Roberts and Shaun Morash recently had a call with Brian Cashman. They asked the Yankees GM, since Joe Torre and Joe Girardi spent 12 and 10 years with the organization, respectively, if there was ever a consideration about how long the same voice should be heard in the room?

On that, Brian Cashman said, “I mean, if I felt that there was a problem with his influence, connectivity, responding, them responding to him or him responding to things via them, then that’s a different conversation we could be having, but I don’t feel that.” In a nutshell, Cashman felt Boone still had a command over the locker room, and for him, it’s a solid foundation to build towards next season’s title push.

“And as I said, I just think that winning is the goal, but it’s not a given. It’s something we’re trying to obviously push through again. In his case, it would be the first time. I’ve won with Girardi and I’ve won with Torrey.” To give reasoning on that, Cashman pointed out that the teams Girardi and Torrey had were different. He emphasized that some of their teams never broke through despite seeming capable, while others did.

“It’s just not easy. It’s as simple as that. But listen, if I felt that there was a disconnect between the manager and players, then that’d be a different conversation.” Cashman added.

While some would roll their eyes at the way Cashman defended Boone, the reality isn’t going to change. The Yankees’ front office still trusts the fact that Boone will help them secure their title no. 28. While the team is reluctant to move on from him, they’ve already made some calls for the coaching staff.

Brian Cashman confirms Yankees’ coaching staff shakeup

After enduring a painful season, Brian Cashman probably had no option but to take this call. He announced recently that longtime bullpen coach Mike Harkey, as well as first base/infield coach Travis Chapman, won’t have their contracts renewed for the 2026 campaign.

Additionally, assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler, 65, will also leave the big-league coaching staff. He’s likely to take on a different role within the organization itself. Next up, Jake Hirst—who has been with the Yankees’ player development department for 8 years now is set to take Roessler’s place on the big-league staff. As Cashman puts it for Hirst, “He’s earned this opportunity.’’

He also added that some other MLB teams also offered a similar role to him. In fact, there are many managerial openings around the league. And so, it’s not yet certain if batting coach James Rowson, third base coach Luis Rojas, and bench coach Brad Ausmus will return or not.

For the record, Cashman has permitted the Minnesota Twins to interview James Rowson. Rojas is also on talking terms with the Baltimore Orioles regarding a managerial role. It’s now time to see what the Yankees’ 2026 run is going to look like. Of course, we have the off-season to look forward to before that.
