The World Series ring has always been Bryce Harper’s North Star. “I know how much it means to him to be in the World Series. It’s a dream. It’s always been his dream,” said Ron Harper, Bryce’s dad, earlier in 2022. The Philadelphia Phillies fell short to the Houston Astros that year. They subsequently missed out on the postseason NLCS and NLDS in the following seasons. The Phillies have often struggled with postseason exits in recent years.
With a 76-57 record, the Phillies currently sit atop the NL East. Given their 99.5% odds of reaching the postseason, the team has been riding high this season. After overcoming various injury setbacks throughout the year, the Phillies now face a major blow with their $126 million star, Zack Wheeler, suffering a season-ending injury.
This setback directly impacts their World Series ambitions. The club officially lost Wheeler to venous thoracic outlet syndrome, ending his season prematurely. Wheeler has been a dominant postseason force, posting a 2.18 ERA across 12 playoff appearances, making his loss a significant challenge for the Phillies’ championship hopes.

The regular season hasn’t been much of a problem for the Phillies, being five games up on the Mets and heavily favored to win the NL East. However, the postseason is going to be tough for the team, as noted by Jim Bowden. Wheeler was supposed to be the Phillies’ anchor for the postseason. He was placed on the injured list right after tossing 97 pitches against the Washington Nationals about two weeks ago.

Prior to that, the 35-year-old had achieved a 10-5 record with a 2.71 ERA throughout 149 2/3 innings and 195 strikeouts. It won’t be easy for Rob Thomson or the Phillies. Right now, they’ve plenty of time to figure it out. Moreover, with Cristopher Sánchez at their disposal, they can worry a little less.
Last year, he was named an All-Star and finished the season posting a 3.32 ERA over 181.2 innings and 31 starts. He replicated the same impressive performance in 2025. Some time ago, he was also predicted to outshine Wheeler. Clearly, he is easily the best “second option” in a rotation.
Phillies can take a sigh of relief with Cristopher Sánchez’s presence
Sánchez has emerged as an ace and is now poised to take the mound as the Phillies’ Game 1 starter. Following him, a rotation featuring Ranger Suárez, Aaron Nola, Jesús Luzardo, and potentially Taijuan Walker presents a formidable lineup— even in Wheeler’s absence. Moreover, top prospect Andrew Painter is waiting in Triple-A, with a return that appears imminent after recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2023.
With Sánchez, Suárez, and Luzardo forming a lefty-heavy top three, the Phillies continue to rely on Aaron Nola. However, Nola is struggling through one of his toughest seasons, posting a 2-7 record with a 6.52 ERA. The Phillies now face the challenge of navigating Wheeler’s absence while striving to maintain their lead in the division standings.

The team must regroup and pull together quickly if they hope to stay ahead and keep their postseason ambitions intact. The pressure is on the Phillies to adjust and find a way forward amid these rotation challenges.
They were recently swept in a three-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Mets outscored them 25-8. Manager Rob Thomson admitted, “We need to play better.” Let’s see if the Phillies and Thomson can shift the odds in their favor.
