The cheers for Masyn Winn‘s game-winning hit had barely faded when they were replaced by sirens and concern on Wednesday night.
The St. Louis Cardinals won the series against the Mets, but the celebration was short-lived as their shortstop, Masyn Winn, was involved in a car crash just after the game. Per reports, he was driving the car alone. It was a scary moment for the clubhouse and the fans. However, the latest update may bring a sigh of relief.
“Following today’s game, Masyn Winn was involved in a single-car accident on Int 64/Hwy 40 due to wet pavement. Masyn, who was alone in the vehicle, was attended to by local police, Cardinals security, and medical staff. He was examined at a nearby hospital and suffered no serious injuries. We are grateful that he is OK, and thank the first responders in our community who helped Masyn tonight,” STL Sports anchor Tamar Sher quoted the Cardinals’ official statement about the accident.
According to reports, no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
While Winn has been released from the hospital, the question, though, is when he will return to the field.

The Cardinals’ next game is against the Tigers on April 3, and it is uncertain whether Winn will play. The team management will surely monitor his mental and physical readiness following the crash. Despite coming out unhurt, Winn might need some recovery time.
The 24-year-old Gold Glove winner is an important weapon in the Cardinals’ arsenal. Even with his torn meniscus that sidelined him in September last year, Winn scored nine homers at .253.
More than that, his defense made the difference last year for the Cardinals. For reference, Winn committed 18 errors in 2024, but in the next season, it came down to only three from 129 games.
That closed his fielding percentage in 2025 to an impressive .994! Additionally, Masyn Winn also had an incredible 21 OAA last year, which ranked second only to Bobby Witt Jr.
While the Cardinals missed Winn’s defense after September last year, they were just able to avoid a disaster now by a whisker.
Even though Winn has started the 2026 season slowly with a batting average of .160, his game-winning hit against the New York Mets in the 11th inning proved his worth. Since the Cardinals tied the score 1-1 in the sixth with a Nolan Gorman RBI, the game went deep into the 11th.
With two outs and a runner on third, Winn lofted a blooper off Mets’ Tobias Myers to the right, recording his 1st career walk-off RBI. The ball dropped in, and the Cardinals’ runner, JJ Wetherholt, crossed home plate. The Cardinals won, and Winn’s ice-cold look, chewing a gum, was an assurance for the fans, only to be struck with unfortunate news hours later.
Prayers pour in for the Cardinals’ shortstop
It feels like pure luck and a miracle that Winn came out unhurt from the accident.
“Thank you, Jesus!” One fan remarked. “Omg, so glad he’s okay. How scary,” another added.
The car reportedly skidded due to wet pavement. And, the speed was probably not high at that moment, protecting Winn from serious injury. While more details about the accident have yet to be reported, it is the first responders’ immediate support that helped the Cardinals’ shortstop receive timely treatment. Now, if Winn takes some time to return, it may only be due to the trauma associated with the occurrence.
“Life happens scarily fast…one moment you’re celebrating with the boys and then the next you’re involved in a car accident. Thank God he was able to walk away from this okay,” another wrote.
Just a few hours before, Winn took the winning hit and casually went inside the players’ huddle, celebrating the win. The entire Busch Stadium was cheering as the players surrounded Winn. No one in their dream would have expected such an upcoming disaster, and it all happened quickly. The game ended in the evening, Winn’s accident happened a few hours later, and by night, he was even released after treatment.
“Scarily fast,” one fan noted.
“Was this an evil April Fool’s post?” one fan asked. Everyone would’ve hoped for that. But it happened, and fortunately, everything has been positive till now.
“I’m glad that Masyn is ok,” another comment read.
Now, as we wait for his speedy recovery, we will also look forward to Masyn Winn’s return, seeing him in action!
