Spring training is supposed to be a fresh start; however, for the St. Louis Cardinals, it is shaping up to be anything but. Nolan Arenado has reported to camp early, yet trade rumors related to the All-Star third baseman continue to intensify. The Cardinals, despite his availability, are pushing to move him before Opening Day. With position players established to officially report on February 16, the front office appears inspired to manage Arenado’s future sooner instead of later. His no-trade clause adds another wrinkle, but with the Red Sox and Yankees still in the mix, a deal remains possible.

The issue now is whether the Cardinals can finalize a trade in time and if the team will be forced into an awkward situation to start the season. They are ready to part ways with Nolan Arenado, focusing on getting a deal done before Opening Day. Such an urgency comes despite the fact that the team has not made any vital off-season acquisitions. The front office appears to be looking ahead, clearing space for younger infielders like Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman. With Nolan Arenado carrying a full no-trade clause, the issue is finding a deal he approves while securing a powerful return for St. Louis.

While Arenado has control over his destination, the Cardinals are actively engaging in trade discussions. MLB Network Insider Mark Linson highlighted this urgency, saying, “You would think that the Cardinals would love to get a trade done before then. Nolan Arenado’s got that full no-trade clause and so he really helps control what is going to happen. But I think there will be some urgency on the Cardinals’ part, if not by February 16th, certainly by the beginning of the season, to be able to start the year with Arenado in another uniform.”. His no-trade clause means he needs to approve any move; however, with Boston and New York as potential fits, the market remains active.

The larger effect of the Nolan Arenado trade

If the Cardinals successfully move Nolan Arenado, it could shake up the third base market, specifically for Alex Bregman. The Astros have already moved on from Bregman, achieving Christian Walker and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. It left him to search for a long-term deal elsewhere. A trade engaging Arenado could enhance Bregman’s value by enhancing the need for high-end third basemen. It could stall his market further as teams focus on trade options over free agency.

Beyond the financial aspect, St. Louis appears set on establishing their future. If Nolan Arenado is dealt with, Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman could step into larger roles. It will reshape the infield. In addition, Walker struggled to manage to the outfield, and a return to his natural place at third could unlock his power. However, Gorman, a power-hitting infielder, would benefit from a clear role. By moving Nolan Arenado, the team could accelerate the youth movement.

The Cardinals’ management of Arenado’s situation could highlight their season. A trade would highlight a transformation to younger talent. However, keeping him could establish tension if his future remains uncertain. Will the front office identify a deal before Opening Day? Share your thoughts below.
