Lost the game to the Cardinals 5-1 at Busch Stadium and still celebrated by pouring Michelob Ultra? That’s how the Milwaukee Brewers celebrated the NL Central title despite the loss. That celebration brought a massive troll for owner Mark Attanasio.

The celebration in the Brewers’ locker room was anything but quiet. Even though they lost, the team won their third straight NL Central division title because the Cubs lost and gave them the crown. The clubhouse was full of rituals. Catcher William Contreras and reliever Abner Uribe splashed buckets of ice water on their teammates. Sal Frelick almost burned the GM, and Nick Mears danced, surprising everyone. Meanwhile, Christian Yelich captured the celebratory vibe, saying, “For us it’s you win a couple games, you win a series, you get that momentum rolling. Truly, anything can happen.”

However, the aftermath of Milwaukee’s wild celebration became a troll. The Brewers reporter Curt Hogg posted an image of the afterparty on X, with the caption, “The Milwaukee Brewers absolutely demolished the Busch Stadium carpet.” The picture showed a clubhouse floor that was entirely ruined by champagne, beer, and other party drinks. Fans jumped on it right away.

Trolls made rounds about how the Cardinals’ administration may issue a bill, Mark Attanasio buying new flooring, and how the team might pay for the damage.

But there’s more to the story than just the carpet.

Vegas thought they would win only 83.5 games in the preseason, and PECOTA figured they would win only 80. The team didn’t make many major changes during the offseason, as well. Their biggest signing was Jose Quintana for $4M after they traded standout closer Devin Williams. By May 18, they were 21-25, four games below .500, with a weak offense and a starting rotation full of injuries that looked mediocre. Yet this ballclub played amazingly well.

“This is why everything is harped on throughout the year, why we pay attention to detail, why there’s tough love throughout the season,” said Christian Yelich. “It’s for these moments.” And manager Pat Murphy embraced the team’s underdog mentality, acknowledging their limitations while celebrating their resilience.

“Are we the most talented? No. Are we going to go up against teams far more talented, with four times the payroll? Sure. But it doesn’t bother this team,” Murphy declared. Then, owner Mark Attanasio captured the season’s essence perfectly.

He stated, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. There’s something special about this team. You can say Brewer magic, Uecker magic. Whatever it is. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Indeed, it has been a great journey for the Brewers so far, but it doesn’t stop them from getting trolled on social media.

Celebration costs, fans troll Brewers owner over carpet

After the picture of the ruined Busch Stadium carpet went viral, one fan joked, “Looks like Mark’s buying new flooring for the Cardinals……” It’s interesting that the damage to the carpet might lead Attanasio to fund the Cardinals’ multi-million dollar facility improvements. Bill DeWitt III, the president of the Cardinals, has said that Busch Stadium needs a “big infusion of capital” in the next three to five years for major repairs, such as new flooring systems.

Another fan chimed in. “Mark is going to be pissed that he’s got to pay for new carpet.” The Brewers’ estimated payroll for the 2025 season is around $113M, which ranks 23rd in MLB. So if the owner needs to pay, it might be a frustrating additional cost for him.

Some fans got curious about protocol, and a direct question was asked by another Brewers writer, Adam.“How does that work Adam? Do the Cardinals send the Brewers a bill for the damage/repairs?” That question reflects uncertainty around who is responsible for damage in situations like this.

Then some looked at the mess and assumed. “For sure Milwaukee ownership will pay to clean the mess 😂.” This reaction suggested that professional sports teams might professionally handle these kinds of issues. Milwaukee probably already knew they would have to pay for the repairs.

One comment even took a sarcastic jab at the payroll of the Brewers. “Mark will trade someone for cash to pay for it.” As per reports, the renovation of Busch Stadium would cost around $500M. The fan’s quip probably pointed at previous trades like Devin Williams, where Attanasio seemed to care little for the team over the cash! Maybe?

The celebration after the loss, which included champagne showers, ice buckets, dancing, and the now-famous damaged carpet, was more than just another NL Central title. It prompted a lot of talk, memes, and trolling aimed at Mark Attanasio. But even after all that, the Milwaukee Brewers’ crown is probably a bit more valuable than the damage or the coming expenses!
