After a disappointing loss in the 2022 playoffs, the New York Yankees organization faced intense criticism from fans. However, the team’s front office, led by Manager Aaron Boone and General Manager Brian Cashman, worked to regain the trust of the fanbase by securing the re-signing of 2022 AL MVP Aaron Judge and the acquisition of rising ace Carlos Rodon. But a recent injury scare for righty pitcher Frankie Montas has once again sparked questions about Cashman’s management and trade decisions, resulting in renewed criticism towards the team’s front office.

Frankie Montas, a seasoned MLB player who began his career with the Chicago White Sox in 2015 before moving to the Oakland Athletics in 2017, was a key player for the Athletics until his trade to the New York Yankees in August 2022. The Yankees, in their pursuit of Frankie Montas and pitcher Lou Trivino, traded JP Sears, Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman to the Athletics in exchange for Trivino and Montas.

As the New York Yankees front office had recently completed a series of arbitration signings, with the exception of shortstop Gleyber Torres, an announcement regarding the injury status of pitcher Frankie Montas has once again led to frustration and anger among fans, directing their disappointment toward the team’s management.

Having avoided arbitration, the New York Yankees inked a $7.5 million deal with pitcher Frankie Montas. However, just two days after the deal was finalized, the team announced that Montas will be missing the first month of the MLB season due to inflammation in his shoulder.

As part of the team’s rotation, Montas was slated to take the fifth spot, following Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, and Nestor Cortes. However, with Montas now facing the possibility of missing over a month due to his shoulder inflammation, either Domingo German or Clarke Schmidt will be tasked with filling his role in the rotation at the fifth position.

Brian Cashman is under fire again

Following the news of Montas’ injury, fans were quick to express their disappointment and frustration towards the New York Yankees’ front office, specifically calling out the trade orchestrated by General Manager Brian Cashman in 2022. Many have stated that this serves as evidence that no team should trade with the Athletics. And that the Yankees’ injury woes have already begun, even before the start of the season. Fans even went far enough to suggest the signing of stained Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer.
