This Saturday had everything: Sunshine, stress, and two brothers against each other. That’s when a simple ground ball turned into a collision loud enough to shake off the dust of six consecutive losses. One team wanted to bounce back, and the other wanted to show who the boss was. The first base drama between the Cardinals and Brewers caught the attention. And amid the drama, Willson Contreras stayed calm.
After spending most of his career behind the plate, Willson Contreras is playing first base this season. And so was in Saturday’s game. Till the bottom of the third inning, the game was going smoothly. Then, Contreras caught the ball from the hot corner, and when he stepped back to reset, Caleb Durbin ran into him hard. Boom!
Both of them were knocked to the ground. What followed? Looks were exchanged between both dugouts. But Contreras and St. Louis stayed calm! But the moment that appeared to be a pause in the game set the tone for the fireworks.

The Cardinals were ahead 7–1 in the fifth inning and would win easily. And then Willson Contreras walks out. Suddenly, there are raw emotions on the diamond. Milwaukee’s veteran pitcher, José Quintana, nods, grabs the ball, and throws an 89 mph fastball that hits him right in the shoulder.

That’s how baseball is: Payback not in words, but in leather. During this chaos, guess who was standing behind the plate? His brother, William Contreras, the catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers. What did he do? Um, nothing!

The benches were about to go clear. The umpires came in with angry faces and quick warnings. But what happened next was another moment of classic baseball theater. A gesture that said a lot about the man at the center of the storm.
Willson Contreras didn’t get mad. Instead, he gently bent down, got the baseball that had just hit him back, and gave it to Quintana. That’s sportsmanship! And an unsaid reply, ‘I got your message, and I’m still here.’

Willson Contreras' calm response to being hit—true sportsmanship or missed opportunity for payback?

And Willson Contreras didn’t just stand there but also led his team to a win. A solo home run in the ninth inning, and the first base patrolling hero walks off with the game in his hands. The final score was 8 to 5 in favor of the Cardinals. Could there BE any better reply than this?
There are often unwritten rules in baseball that say a pitcher should fight back when one of his own is attacked. But what if the target is your brother? A baseball drama with a family twist.
Contreras duo make MLB history with ninth-inning homers
Between the drama and the tension, the Contreras brothers carved their name in the rich history.
St. Louis Cardinals 1B Willson Contreras and his brother William Contreras of the Milwaukee Brewers hit home runs in the ninth inning. This was only the second time in MLB history that siblings hit home runs in the same games as opponents, the first time being in 1933.

On July 19, 1993, Rick Ferrell and Wes Ferrell became the first duo to achieve this feat. Rick Ferrell was the Boston Red Sox’s catcher, while his brother Wes Ferrell was the Cleveland Indians’ pitcher. Rick hit a home run against Wes in the second inning. Wes then hit a home run for Cleveland in the third inning.
And now on Saturday, Willson hit his tenth home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning, making the score 8–4. And William hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff blast to left field put the Brewers on the board and ended the game at 8–5.
Willson Contrera looked into the Milwaukee dugout as he ran around the bases, but he didn’t say anything as he passed home plate. William later shared, “When we’re out there during the game, it’s not exactly like we’re family members. We’re out there competing. If there’s something to be discussed… they do it. But yeah, we’re out there to compete and he’s playing his game and we’re playing ours.”
