Gerrit Cole‘s stories keep getting wilder. The much-loved New York Yankees ace is a unique character off the field. With stories like his love for Harry Styles to his cute videos with his children, Cole is a favorite of the Yankees Nation. But his intensity on-field is second to none. One of the most brilliant baseball minds of this era, Cole is always planning his next move. Nothing can drive him to distraction, not even a snack to restore energy. Or so says Clarke Schmidt.

Cole is nearing his first-ever Cy Young award, a shoo-in for the AL. While his hyper-competitiveness is common news, the sheer level of his intensity is still unknown. Schmidt recently revealed just how fired up Cole gets during games. His focus is reflected by the bizarre way he eats his food in the dugout. Though his eating habits in general are peculiar according to Schmidt, this one takes the cake.

Gerrit Cole doesn’t eat but devours bananas

Baseball is a highly stressful sport, especially when one is the starting pitcher. Every inning one needs to do something different to dominate the opponents. Players have their own ways of dealing with this heavy pressure they snack on fruit for an energy boost. For Gerrit Cole, his way is eating bananas in his own uniquely efficient way.

As told by the Athletic, fellow Pinstriper Clarke Schmidt revealed earlier in the season how frighteningly quick and efficient Cole is when eating fruits. “If you ever get a chance to somehow catch him in the dugout eating a banana, he always seems to scarf it down in 0.1 seconds, it’s always when he’s pitching, so you can’t chirp him too hard,” Schmidt said. It’s always the best seeing it though. He’s so aggressive.”

Then the pitcher explained why Cole does this – it’s because his mind works too quickly during intense moments, “It’s like, dude, how about you enjoy a bite? His mind is running so fast when he’s pitching that he doesn’t even put any thought into it. It’s like, I need to get this in my body to focus on pitching.”

Cole’s aggressive eating though is not just limited to when he is playing as his pitching partner clarified. “Everything he eats is weird, though. You should see the guy eat a pork chop. Anything that seems to have bone marrow, he goes insane for. He eats pork chops the same way he eats bananas. He scarfs it down. It’s like almost bone and all. It’s unbelievable.”

With such intensity, it is no surprise that Cole has regularly struck fear in many batters. Now as he’s nearing the Cy Young Award, it’s worth having a quick look at what makes him so special for the Bronx Bombers.

The deep connection between Cole and Yankees Nation

Gerrit Cole himself has been a part of the Yankees Nation since childhood. He first became popular when he was seen holding a poster in support of the Pinstripes in 2001. When he signed the $324 million contract with the Yankees, the biggest for a pitcher yet, fans knew one of their own was joining the team.

Since then Cole has been a consistent pillar for the Bronx club. Under him, the pitching of the Yankees improved to such an extent that even during their bad 2023, they were near the top in every pitching metric. Apart from this, Cole’s 2.63 ERA is not just the best in AL but it is best across the league.
