New York Yankees are among one of the most recognizable sports teams in the world. With the word ‘Yankee’ more or less synonymous with ‘USA’, there is rarely anyone who doesn’t recognize the MLB heavyweights. Why is that? In addition to being America’s favorite pastime, baseball is also one of the oldest sports in the country. And right around the time the sport was born, so were the Yankees. Give or take a few years.

As such, the franchise has seen a number of players come and go in the last century that have raised its name to even greater glory. If one were to ask who the greatest players have been so far, everyone has a different answer. But here are some names from current pro baseballer Clay Holmes.

Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera are names that have contributed immensely to the Yankee name. Each a legend in their own right, these four players undoubtedly changed the course of the franchise’s story. And Clay Holmes thinks the same. When asked about who he would put on Mount Rushmore for the Yankees, he gave these four names only.

Popular opinion states that the Pinstripes are one of the hardest teams to choose great players from. Mount Rushmore is a famously debated topic whose conclusion never quite manages to satisfy everyone. But given the current era, Ruth, Mantle, Jeter, and Rivera are certainly among the top ballplayers.

Holmes’ answer received mixed reviews from baseball Twitter. The pitcher has been facing some trouble on the field this season. After being traded to the Bronx Bombers last year, fans had expectations of him that were never met. But at least in this, some agree wholeheartedly, while some had different names to offer.

Baseball fans give their own opinion on the Yankees’ version of Mount Rushmore

This is the kind of question that has no correct answer. When Talkin’ Yanks posted the clip of Holmes talking about this top honor, some fans commented on how this was the correct list, while some added a few names of their own.

One fan disagreed with putting Jeter on the list, while one thought Alex Rodriguez deserved a spot.

Many named Joe DiMaggio among the players that deserved to be on the list.
