New York Yankees and Jordan Montgomery – a growing connection

When Monty was let go in 2022, the reason given by the Yankees was the depth of pitchers. In the Pinstripes, Montgomery would have been a fifth-choice starter or even worse. But 2023 changed a lot of things. With Montgomery’s World Series heroics plus the Yankees losing their depth, their reunion looks more and more enticing.

Though there were initial reports that the Red Sox were pushing hard for Monty, his presence in Boston gave credence to these reports. Could it really happen? At the same time, Jon Heyman of the New York Post asserts, “The Yankees would like to bring back Montgomery.” It’s not a hidden fact that the Bombers need a pitcher. In their current rotation, only Gerrit Cole and Clark Schmidt had a good season in 2023. Players like Carlos Rodon are still trying to find their footing in the Pinstripes. Montgomery, who already knows how the Yankees work, feels like a natural solution.

With the pitcher reportedly looking for a contract comparable to the six-year $162 million the Yankees gave Rodon, he’ll certainly be an expensive addition. But in the current market, the Bombers may not have many options.

The other possible targets for the Pinstripes

Heyman also said that he’s not sure how involved the Yankees are in the Blake Snell business. As of now, no links have been identified between the two parties. So that leaves the Pinstripes with Cuban pitcher Yariel Rodriguez, but there’s a slight trouble even in those talks.

Reports have indicated that Rodriguez sees himself as a starter while the Yankees view him as a reliever. Though Rodriguez isn’t ruling out any team based on this factor, with basic demands being so different, things are starting to look bleak on that front. Then maybe a homecoming is Montgomery’s destiny, maybe it really is written in the stars.
