Once an MLB heartthrob, Derek Jeter dated quite a few women during his younger days. One of the first few women he dated after becoming a Yankee was his teenage dream girl, Mariah Carey. As a teenager, the former shortstop had posters of the singer in his room. Not only did he want to date her, but he also dreamed of marrying her one day. But dating Carey did not come without its challenges to Jeter. For those unversed, when Jeter and Carey had started dating, the latter was already married to the producer Tommy Mottola. 

Then, years after dating Jeter, the singer, in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, revealed what went into chasing her happily ever after with the former Yankee.

For the singer and the former Yankee to get into a legitimate relationship, Carey had to take a divorce from her then-husband. She wrote in her memoir how she speeded things up with her divorce. The “Roof” singer had hired a new lawyer and went to the Dominican Republic.

The moment she got her ‘freedom papers’, she hopped on a jet to Tampa, where Jeter was for spring training. “On that flight, I wasn’t afraid. I was incredibly vulnerable and raw. I’d closed and opened a door. My romantic life up until then had been so grim, why not believe in a fairy tale? I couldn’t wait to fall into his arms with divorce papers in hand.”

Although Carey was very close to having her fairy tale, her relationship with Jeter did not work out for a long time. But, over the years, the singer had spoken about her relationship with Jeter on multiple occasions.

Whenever the singer had a chance to speak about her relationship with the baseball star, she always described it as the perfect time of her life. The former couple dated for almost a year, and it left a big impact on her life.

She had said that if it wasn’t for the former Yankee, she never would have known that she needed to get out of her relationship with Mottola. Carey recalled Jeter was the ‘catalyst’, as she didn’t know she needed to be happy again.
