If you are keeping track of the drama in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox just added another chapter to it. Complete with a private jet, a surprise meeting, and a sudden red-hot Rafael Devers. And it all started with a wretched injury!

After Triston Casas went down with a season-ending patellar tendon injury, the Boston Red Sox front office was in a fix-it mode. So they turned to Devers and asked him to consider playing at first base. But this time, Devers didn’t take it well. “They had the conversation with me. I don’t think for me personally it’s the best decision after they asked me to play a different position, and I only have two months of playing this position… From my end, it doesn’t seem like a good decision.” But is it surprising to see him frustrated and angry, perhaps?

Not really, because back in February, Devers gave up third base and agreed to DH, even when he was very much against it. Now that he has adjusted to the DH role, the team wants another change. And this time, they even flew to Kansas City to talk. And this, according to insider David Samson, is never the right call.

So John Henry, Sam Kennedy, and Craig Breslow all boarded a plane to have a heart-to-heart talk with Devers. But mind you—this was no simple talk, and it didn’t have agents around. According to Breslow, Henry spoke to Raffy directly and expressed what the Boston Red Sox value most—being great teammates. But David Samson warned, Never let your owner speak alone to a player.”

According to Samson, this opens the floodgates to confusion and chaos. “Never let your owner speak alone to a player because you will get seven different stories about what took place. The agent will have one, the player will have one, the clubhouse will have one, the owner will have one, and the president and GM will have a different one.” And right now, apparently, even inside the clubhouse, situations are tense. Teammates were stunned that Devers had so publicly expressed that he doesn’t want to move. Samson called it nothing short of mutiny.

There are even rumors that Devers is so angry with the situation that he would want to go ahead with a trade. And this couldn’t come at a worse time! This is because Devers has only just caught fire. Seven hits in 12 at-bats, six RBIs, and a home run. Infact, Alex Cora made a bold claim that he is the best DH there. However, amidst all this, what’s also alarming is that this upsurge is just days after that meeting. Now this is the same man who started 0 for 19!

What’s your perspective on:

Is Rafael Devers justified in resisting another position change, or should he prioritize team needs?

Passan urges Rafael Devers to stay open-minded

Rafael Devers doesn’t want to move, and he is serious. He said that he knows he is a ballplayer, but at the same time, to expect him to play every single position out there is not fair. Devers said. “In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove — that I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH. So right now I just feel like it’s not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.” However, not everyone thinks it would be a bad idea to move.

Jeff Passan from ESPN chimed in on the situation, and while he understood the dilemma of Devers, he said a little flexibility won’t hurt. Especially given that the postseason chances can be on the line. “The Red Sox screwed up during spring training. They just did not handle it particularly well, but when Casas goes down and the Red Sox have playoff aspirations, if you are Rafael Devers, you have to be open-minded to this, and eventually, I think that’s where they’re going to land,” Passan said on Baseball Tonight.

But despite all the tension, Devers still let his bat do the talking for Boston. He racked up three RBIs on Saturday and followed with another two on Sunday. And though a mutiny is what Samson says is going on in the clubhouse, the players still have Devers’s back. Lucas Giolito, who threw 6.2 shutout innings in that game, said, “I’m glad he’s on my team and I don’t have to pitch to him anymore. He’s an incredible hitter, and we’re very lucky to have him.” So now it depends if Devers will end up bending the knee, thinking for the greater good, and changing positions again for the second time.
