The Cubs are now at a crossroads, and it is two stars who now hold the keys. Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong were once at the center of the Cubs’ offensive dominance with MVP aspirations early in the season. However, as the calendar flipped toward September, the 2 stars’ struggles, one because of injury and the other because of inexperience, have cast doubt on how far this team can go in October.

The timing of the Tucker and PCA downturn could not be worse. Since July, the team has watched its commanding division lead evaporate, falling behind the Brewers while clinging to a Wild Card cushion. As Sahadev Sharma from the Athletic said, what was once a “formidable unit” now becomes vulnerable, with Kyle Tucker’s calf issues, PCA’s prolonged slump, and inconsistencies from Michael Busch and Seiya Suzuki forcing the team to leave its early-season form. If the lineup can not find its rhythm quickly, the Cubs’ dilemma only grows louder.
This is where the financial stakes come into play. MLB insider Jon Heyman says Tucker could land around $400M in free agency, cementing the star as a valuable player on the market. However, PCA, just 23 and still finding his base, could ask for a $100M extension if the star lives up to his five-tool power. Add that up and you are looking at a half-billion-dollar concern: is the team willing to commit long-period if the Cubs’ two stars can not prove themselves when it matters most?

The team has already highlighted signs of caution. PCA was currently provided a rare “reset” with three full days off to clear his head after a brutal August in which PCA hit just .160 with the worst OPS and wRC+ among qualified hitters. Craig Counsell safeguarded the move, saying that PCA’s speed and defense are still elite; however, it was clear the reset was planned to jumpstart the star’s bat. For Kyle Tucker, a similar reset earlier in August worked effectively. After going through a hairline finger fracture, Tucker bounced back with a scorching .364/.462/.727 line across 12 games, proving how quickly fortunes can turn.
That contrast highlights the crossroads the Cubs face. Kyle Tucker has shown the star can reset, recover, and deliver like an All-Star again. However, PCA remains a work in progress — specifically, against fastballs, where the star is hitting just .111 in current weeks. Opposing pitchers know PCA’s weakness, and until the star adjusts, the team’s lineup will be under pressure. Whether the 2 stars rise to the moment or continue to stumble could decide not only the Cubs’ playoff fate, but also whether management is ready to write the $500 million check to keep the stars around long period.

While Kyle Tucker’s calf soreness remains the quick storyline, the looming concern extends far beyond September. The team knows Tucker’s future could redefine the Cubs’ offseason trajectory, yet Craig Counsell is not the only one preparing a blockbuster pitch for the All-Star outfielder.
Four big-market rivals ready to derail Cubs reunion hopes
The Dodgers are in the front of the chase, armed with unmatched financial muscle and glaring needs in the team’s outfield. Slotting Kyle Tucker alongside Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman would quickly reset the balance of power in the NL West. However, the Giants, who are long desperate for a marquee star, could seize this scope to finally land a team centerpiece, pairing Kyle Tucker with Rafael Devers for an elite one-two punch.
On the East Coast, the Phillies and the Yankees loom as vital obstacles. The Phillies could clear Castellanos’ deal to retool around Schwarber, Harper, and Turner, establishing a powerhouse lineup. On the contrary, the Yankees could lose Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, making Kyle Tucker the ideal left-handed counterpart to Aaron Judge. With four heavyweight teams circling, the Cubs face a steep uphill climb in keeping their star.

Kyle Tucker’s future is shaping up to be a defining storyline of the upcoming offseason. While the Cubs would love to keep the star in Chicago, the financial firepower and roster needs of the Dodgers, Giants, Phillies, and Yankees make that path uncertain at best. At the same time, Tucker and PCA’s performance in the upcoming period also decides the Cubs’ future.
