Coming from a quiet 2-for-12 stretch in Cleveland, the star Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been sidelined for the marquee series against the New York Yankees. In his absence, Miguel Rojas has stepped in. Unfortunately, Betts stubbed his toe at his home on Wednesday, as revealed by manager Dave Roberts.
The severity of the injury is yet to be revealed; however, the Dodgers fans would want to remain optimistic and hope it turns out to be a minor discomfort.
To Roberts’ belief, Betts injured his toe on some furniture. “I really don’t know. I think it was at home, and it was probably a dresser or nightstand, something like that,” the manager said. “It was just kind of an accident. I think Mookie will be able to give more context, but that’s from the training staff, I heard.”

Betts is undergoing X-rays and will be checked on a day-to-day basis. “Right now, I’m not overly concerned.” Roberts added. While he is hopeful Betts will be back in the lineup soon, the injury was certainly painful enough for the 32-year-old shortstop to not be able to put on a shoe on Friday.
Since the beginning of this month, Betts has been putting up impressive numbers at the plate. He has recorded a .258 batting average with a .336 OBP and a .402 slugging percentage. Moreover, he’s posted 4 home runs, 12 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases across 110 plate appearances. It’s simply a testament to his overall impact on the diamond.
It’s been a tough season for Betts. At the beginning of this season, it was a stomach bug that kept him out for a long time. And now, another painful short-term setback.
What’s your perspective on:
Can the Dodgers maintain their momentum without Mookie Betts, or is his absence a game-changer?

Before the toe injury, Betts had already faced a tough start to the season
When the Dodgers opened the 2025 season against the Chicago Cubs for the Tokyo Series, Betts barely got to take the field. He was a bit sick with a stomach bug; however, he was still expected to be a part of the opening day lineup at home.

However, things took a sharp turn. The stomach bug led to him losing 20 pounds and he had to fly back home for 10 days to recover. It turned out to be a nightmare for the Dodgers as Betts’ drastic weight loss suggested that he might have to have a stint on the injured list for a while.
It took Betts a whole six weeks to be able to get back in form and refine his swing. Now the Dodgers are hopeful that this toe injury doesn’t prove to be a major setback for the shortstop.
Opening up about his struggles a while back while talking to the Los Angeles Times, Betts said, “I’m not Shohei.” Apparently, Ohtani can hit the home runs even when his swing isn’t the best, which might not be the case with Mookie. He further explained, “Even when I have my A-swing, if I don’t get it, it’s not gonna be a homer. If I don’t flush that ball in that gap, they’re going to catch it. And that is when I’m fully healthy.”
