David Ortiz never misses a chance to hurt the New York Yankees. The Hall of Fame slugger, who hit .303 and hit 53 home runs in 243 games against the Yankees, watched the 2025 ALDS with barely contained joy. After the Yankees knocked the Red Sox out in the Wild Card series, Ortiz found someone else to cheer for. The answer? Toronto Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays have scored 23 runs against New York in two games, and their lineup set an MLB record for home runs hit in the first two games of a playoff series. In the fourth inning of Game 2, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit the first postseason grand slam in Blue Jays history. This gave Toronto a 9-0 lead. Every player in Toronto’s lineup has at least one hit, but Yankees pitching has fallen apart under the pressure.

Ortiz couldn’t help but celebrate the destruction. He posted from Cancun, Mexico, on Instagram, saying,  “At cancun mexico waiting for my visitor”, a direct callback to his prediction from two days earlier. “They can bring Jesus back, and they’re still going to Cancun,” Ortiz declared before the series. “It’s over. It’s a wrap. Just so you know. This Toronto Blue Jays lineup ain’t playing around.” His words proved prophetic as Toronto’s bats continued their historic tear.

The former Red Sox legend took his trolling further during a broadcast appearance with Derek Jeter. “The only chance the Yankees have is if you, Mo, Andy, and A-Rod come back and play. Reggie Jackson, Babe Ruth, all of them,” Ortiz told Jeter after New York lost for the second time in a row. The comment hurt a lot, implying that even the Yankees’ storied history couldn’t save them from their current disaster.

Shane Bieber is going to pitch Game 3, and Toronto’s momentum seems to be unstoppable. Ortiz’s plans for the Yankees’ vacation might come true.

Blue Jays eye historic sweep as Bieber takes the mound

Ortiz loves being in the front row to watch New York’s misery, but Game 3 is Toronto’s best chance to finish the sweep. Shane Bieber carries that chance on his shoulders, and the former Cy Young winner comes with a strong October resume. The Blue Jays got the 30-year-old right-hander from Cleveland just before the trade deadline, and he quickly showed how good he was.

Bieber has a 4-2 record in seven starts with the Blue Jays, striking out 37 batters in more than 40 innings. Carlos Rodón, the Yankees’ 32-year-old lefty, will be his opponent on Tuesday. Rodón had 18 wins this season, which is the second most in the league behind teammate Max Fried, who Toronto hit for seven earned runs on Sunday. The pitching matchup is better for Toronto, but baseball rarely goes as planned.

A sweep is still possible, but it’s not a sure thing. This season, the New York Yankees and the Toronto both won 94 games. The Blue Jays won the division because they won the most games against each other. The division title also gave Toronto almost a week off while the Yankees played three tough Wild Card games against Boston.

If the Blue Jays win on Tuesday, they will play either Seattle or Detroit in the ALCS. The Commissioner’s Trophy is behind that. Toronto hasn’t touched it since beating Atlanta in 1992 and Philadelphia in 1993, more than 30 years ago. Do you think the Blue Jays can go all the way this postseason?  Or will the Yankees make the unlikeliest of comebacks? Share your thoughts in the comments.
