Anthony Volpe is a rising star for the New York Yankees. In the appearances that he has made this season, there have been flashes of great play. But he is still a raw prospect at 22-years-old with much to learn. Most recently, the star infield prospect confirmed that he is a Derek Jeter fan by putting him atop an important list.

Volpe has won the fans over and has a good relationship with a number of his teammates. But Jeter holds a special place in his heart as his favorite icon. But most recently, Volpe put the legendary shortstop atop a very important personal list.

Derek Jeter was Anthony Volpe’s favorite shortstop growing up

All young prospects and talents have their favorite players and icons. This is especially true for the position that the prospect wishes to play. For Anthony Volpe, Derek Jeter was his favorite shortstop as a young baseball fan growing up. Most recently, the 22-year-old Yankee prospect interacted with sports reporter Mike Daddino. While speaking to him, Volpe named his three favorite shortstops growing up. Jeter topped the list, with Francisco Lindor and Brandon Crawford coming in second and third place, respectively. Daddino shared a video of Volpe listing his favorite shortstops on Twitter.

In the video, the 22-year-old says, “Um, Jeter is definitely number 1. I love Lindor, and um, third one I like is Brandon Crawford.” These were some interesting choices by the youngster, but Jeter reigned supreme. Volpe considers the legendary shortstop his idol.

Volpe is the Yankees’ starting shortstop this year and has flashed great potential. Furthermore, he has drawn comparisons to some of the greats, including Jeter on occasion. But despite his delight at being compared to the 5-time World Series champion, Volpe denied the comparison.

Every young baseball player wishes to be compared with their idol. This includes Anthony Volpe. But he very quickly shut down any and all comparisons to Derek Jeter. Volpe said that being linked to an icon like Jeter is humbling, but that the legendary shortstop is one-of-a-kind. He concluded by saying that the comparisons are over-exaggerated.
