It’s hard to imagine things going much worse for the Yankees right now. You see, every corner of their game is cracking under the pressure. Bullpen meltdowns, an offense that can’t find a rhythm, and defensive miscues that keep piling up. And just when it seemed like the list of problems couldn’t grow any longer, baserunning blunders have now entered the picture, a glaring sign of a team steadily slipping out of the World Series race.

Over the past several weeks, the Yankees have found themselves repeatedly on the wrong end of plays that manager Aaron Boone insists can’t happen. And if you are not aware, Saturday brought another costly example. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was doubled off first on a routine pop-up to second in the second inning, setting the tone for yet another loss. And as a result, the Yankees lost both the game and the series to the Marlins.

The blunder was enough for the Yankees’ legends, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, to get frustrated and vocal, asking about the accountability from the team!

They make way too many mistakes… They had a baserunning mistake today… You have to clean it up… There’s no excuse. You have to play better. If you don’t play better, you’re not going to go very far,” Jeter shared his frustration in the post-game interview with FOX MLB.

Well, if you check the highlights, you will wonder about the Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm. Reportedly, Chisholm was on first when Paul Goldschmidt lofted an easy pop-up to second. But for some reason, Chisholm just hung out between the bases. He lingered, and lingered, and never bothered to get back. And just then, the Marlins’ Xavier Edwards made the catch and, with a quick throw to first, doubled him off.

So, what was Chisholm thinking? Honestly, your guess is as good as anyone’s. Jeter rightly highlighted the baserunning mistake. But A-Rod seems to be in the mood to offer any diplomatic immunity to the Yankees. “Where is the accountability? If any of us made a mistake [like Jazz], we would be sitting our butt right on the bench.

Well, we are also not clear about why Chisholm got blanked. A-Rod thinks there’s no accountability in the team. Citing his own example, he wonders what would have happened during his time for such a misplay. However, there are such examples in recent times. Remember, Gleyber Torres was removed during the fourth inning after he watched a fly ball fall in and was thrown out at home in August last year?

And yes, if the viral footage is anything to go by, an outburst is evident in the Yankees’ dugout involving Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ first base coach, and Chisholm. Something that reflects something is wrong inside the clubhouse!

What’s your perspective on:

With legends like Jeter and A-Rod frustrated, is it time for a leadership change in the Yankees?

Have an interesting take?

The Yankees’ manager shared his thoughts on the baserunning blunder

Well, apart from Jeter and A-Rod being vocal about the Yankees’ slump on the field, it is their manager, Aaron Boone, who also took on Chisholm.

One viral video shows a visibly frustrated Boone showing emotion to the Yankees’ first base coach and also having a talk with Chisholm in the dugout. And well, there are enough reasons for Boone to get frustrated this season. Dropping their second straight game to the Marlins is another frustrating moment, especially as they try to chase down the Blue Jays in the AL East race. Saturday’s loss leaves the Yankees 4.5 games back of the Blue Jays and just a half-game behind the Red Sox.

However, despite Boone being seen having a heated conversation, he is still not ready to take any drastic action.

I’m not just gonna take guys out for giving a crap,” Boone said.

So, Yankees manager Aaron Boone isn’t planning to bench Jazz Chisholm, even after the second baseman’s baserunning mistake on Saturday. According to Boone, Chisholm thought the fielder might intentionally let the ball drop to go after the lead runner, which left him too far from first to get back in time.

This season, we saw that shortstop Anthony Volpe is among the league leaders in errors. And those miscues have cost the team wins that could have had them sitting near the top of the AL. The front office did what it could at the trade deadline to patch some holes, and despite the mistakes, Boone continues to trust his players. Hence, for guys like Chisholm, that faith can pay off, and it gives Yankees fans a reason to stay optimistic.
