Aaron Judge once again fell short as a captain to lead his team to glory; this time, it was with Team USA in the WBC 2026 finals. Venezuela took its first WBC title home, dominating the star-studded Team USA by 3-2 in the championship match. Ahead of Tuesday’s final, Captain Judge had revealed how he preferred the WBC crowd over the World Series fans. And that ignited a response from Derek Jeter.

In the wake of Judge’s remarks, former New York Yankees shortstop and CEO of the Miami Marlins, Derek Jeter, made his disagreement known. Following Team Venezuela’s WBC triumph, Jeter has now caught the fans’ ire on social media.

As the USA faced off against Team Venezuela in the WBC final, Fox Sports: MLB quoted Derek Jeter saying, “I think the people that say it’s (WBC) bigger than the World Series never played in a World Series.”

The five-time World Series winner Jeter took a dig at those who placed the WBC above the World Series, including the current Yankees captain Aaron Judge.

For Jeter, the eight-month-long grind of the MLB regular season and postseason to reach the World Series is more significant than the WBC, which is a short-term tournament that concludes in about two weeks.

Judge has only played in one World Series in his decade-long career, which the Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024. Judge’s World Series experience is short-lived compared to that of Jeter.

Even though the 2024 World Series had an average attendance of 50,621 per game, compared to Mexico vs USA, which had 41,628 fans in attendance at Daikin Park in Houston, Judge insisted that the WBC crowd felt “bigger” and “better” than the World Series.

“I’d say it’s been bigger. The World Series I was in, the crowd here, the crowd we had when we played against Mexico, it’s bigger and better than the World Series. As I said, the passion that these fans have representing their country, representing some of their favorite players, there’s nothing like it,” commented Judge, revealing how he prefers the intense atmosphere filled with national pride more.

But ultimately, Judge failed to step up against Venezuela with the very crowd he preferred cheering in the background. In probably the biggest game of his career, ‘Captain America’ struggled at the plate, finishing 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. While Bryce Harper’s tying home run at the bottom of the eighth ignited some hopes for the USA fans, Javier Sanoja rounded third to cement Venezuela’s victory.

After Venezuela’s first WBC title win, fans on social media became active, including the US President Donald Trump on Truth Social. Trump made a post about announcing Venezuela as the USA’s 51 state.

However, amid all these, Derek Jeter’s remarks caught the fans’ attention, bringing a dose of online bashing for him.

Derek Jeter’s comments triggered anger from fans

Jeter downplaying the World Baseball Classic did not sit well with fans, as the Venezuelans are just basking in their first WBC title win glory. Fans took to X to make their displeasure known.

“Venezuela will always remember they won this one…they don’t care about the Dodgers winning 2 in a row…Derek Jeter is a moron,” wrote one fan, emphasizing what the WBC title win means to Venezuela. The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the World Series back-to-back in 2024 and 2025. They defeated the Yankees in 2024, while the 2025 World Series was a 7-match thriller.

Last season, the Dodgers secured their win against the Blue Jays in a nail-biting 11-inning game. Yet it means little to Venezuela, being a country where MLB is not played.

Another user on X commented, “Derek Jeter has always been a bum, and he’s a sh-t owner with an enormous ego who feels threatened by the WBC.” The significance of the WBC as an international tournament has grown over the years. It is a tournament that brings together the world’s baseball-playing nations.

It has grown financially as well, with the 2026 edition prize money pool being much higher than before. To fans, Jeter, who was also the former CEO of the Miami Marlins, appears insecure about WBC’s rapid growth.

“By the way, Derek Jeter can go f—k himself,” one fan expressed just how they feel about Jeter and his remarks, straight and brutal. While another just had enough of Jeter’s bitter remarks, noted, “Derek Jeter should be in jail.”

One fan highlighted, “The ‘24 appearance was so forgettable Derek Jeter forgot Aaron Judge played in that joint.” According to Jeter, those who prefer the WBC have not played in the World Series. But Judge is one of those who preferred the WBC despite playing in the World Series.

This fan took a dig at Judge and the Yankees’ eventual loss to the Dodgers in 2024, indicating the former Yankee actually forgot Judge’s brief World Series stint. In the 2024 World Series, Judge had one shining moment when he hit his first career World Series home run in Game 5. Judge batted .222 with one home run and three RBIs during the championship.

“The truth is they’re both overrated as f—k, but there’s no world where Aaron Judge is more meaningful to the Yankees than Derek Jeter,” noted another user. Judge has outperformed Jeter in offense throughout his Yankees career. Judge’s career OPS (1.028) is far higher than Jeter’s .817 career OPS, reflecting elite power and on-base ability.

His 62-home run 2022 season set an American League record, while Jeter’s single-season high was 24. Furthermore, Jeter never won a regular-season MVP award, while Judge has already been a three-time winner (2022, 2024, and 2025). However, Jeter’s postseason success puts him ahead of the 33-year-old Yankees captain.

Now, whether the WBC is bigger than the World Series or not is a matter of perspective. But one thing is for certain: the game now is bigger than ever, growing across borders.
