Celebrities and the concept of privacy don’t necessarily go hand in hand. When the whole world knows a person’s name, they feel entitled to know everything about what they do or don’t do, what they like or dislike. But perhaps the most interesting is who someone is dating. And when a person is as popular or well-liked as Derek Jeter in his prime, privacy is next to impossible. But the question is, was Jeter successful in managing his privacies?

Throughout the twenty seasons of his career, the former Yankee was linked to various women. The media and fans went hand-in-hand in reporting and reading about Jeter’s personal life. This meant the new York Yankees legend was almost always in the news, and this immense popularity led him to have some safeguards in place. After all, not every woman could be ‘the one!’

Derek Jeter had something of a screening process when dating a woman

In an interview with Sports Illustrated in 1999, the former shortstop talked about how he didn’t date much and preferred being a homebody. But when he did find someone to go out with, it couldn’t just be anybody.

“I think I’m a pretty good judge of character,” said Jeter, “but even if you fool me, you’ve got to get by my mom and my sister. It takes a lot to pass that test.” When someone’s popular, it can be hard to ascertain whether someone likes you for you or if it’s just your status. But from the looks of it, the former captain’s sense of judgment saved him from any terrible fates.

Jeter’s mom and sister, Dorothy and Sharlee respectively, acted as excellent safeguards if someone did somehow manage to slip past the now-retired athlete’s judgment.

Even Mariah Carey wasn’t spared the screening test

Derek Jeter had a highly publicized relationship with Mariah Carey that tabloids loved to write about. While the former Yankee was a superstar in his own right, Carey was and still is one of the most popular singers in the world. However, when it came to his family, Jeter still had the support of his sister.

Sharlee Jeter commented, “I ended up loving Mariah Carey to death, but I would’ve taken her on, too, if she hadn’t measured up. People said, ‘Oooh, it’s Mariah Carey, that’s perfect.’ I was like, I don’t know who she is. I know how she is on TV, but that doesn’t tell me anything. So, yeah, she still had to go through the Test, and yeah, she passed. I think she was forewarned.”
