Barry Bonds wanted to play baseball and go home
Barry Bonds remained an enigmatic figure for much of his career. He sometimes refused to answer media questions and, while responding, would avoid sharing key points. But since retiring, he has softened considerably and is more comfortable peeling back the layers and sharing.
While appearing on the R2C2 Podcast with Ryan Ruocco and CC Sabathia, he opened up about being a loner. Bonds also confirmed he was not upset about missing a World Series title.

During the episode, Bonds said, “I didn’t care about winning or losing, that didn’t really bother me ‘cause I thought I was a winner because I was out there, trying. Can’t win everything.” The 7x MVP further talked about his dad’s perspective of a winner.

“My dad was always like, you know, you’re a winner by being there. Just don’t be a quitter, just don’t quit. Finish the race, doesn’t matter what place you come in. So you finish, you win.” Barry further reiterated not winning the World Series.

“I never won the World Series, but I never felt like I was a loser. I’ve just always been a to-myself kind of person. I can’t explain it to people. I don’t really try to avoid anything. I just don’t like a lot of chaos.”

This was a straightforward answer from Bonds as he touched on some essential ideas and thoughts. As one of baseball’s greatest players, he doesn’t mind not winning a World Series. Furthermore, he openly revealed his mindset toward playing the game.

Bonds’ loner-like attitude costed him a lot
Although Barry Bonds can explain his intentions today, that may not have been the case in the past. He got a lot of flak for being a loner and not interacting with his teammates.
Furthermore, his awkward social skills may have even cost him sponsorships as he struggled to find endorsement deals. It did not help his already divisive image, either. But this all came from wanting to play baseball, give his all, and go home.
