The Yankees are still trying to figure out who will man third base, especially with Gleyber Torres now headed to the Tigers. The big question is whether they’ll make a splash in the trade market or roll with what they’ve got. Keith McPherson of WFAN Radio, isn’t buying into the rumors though. He doesn’t think the Yanks will make a big move for a high-profile guy like Alex Bregman or Luis Arraez—and honestly, he thinks it’s for the best.

He contends that the Yankees have been changing their mentality and that well-known players don’t align with the new outlook. For instance, Bregman. Although he is a World Series champion and a good batsman, Keith believes the Yankees don’t need him at his age. Additionally, a player in the end of his career faces greater danger the longer an agreement lasts.

The Yanks might not be interested in Alex Bregman because of age factor

On a recent episode of WFAN Radio, the host urges the team to consider someone like Marwin Gonzalez, who may not be expensive but nevertheless has enough energy to have an influence. The Yankees have used this low-risk, high-reward tactic often throughout the years. After an incredible nine years with the Houston Astros, Alex Bregman, at thirty, is entering free agency for the first time. He is a professional with .272 batting average and with a .366 on-base percentage who hit 26 home runs and drove in 75 RBIs in 145 games in 2024. It’s simple to understand why he’s still considered a great player when you look at his two World Series rings from 2017 and 2022.

But the truth of free agency is that, even if Bregman has demonstrated his ability to produce at the greatest level, teams may be hesitant due to a few issues, most notably his age and the expensive cost. Bregman is approaching the end of his prime at the age of 30, which raises concerns about his long-term worth. Teams are hesitant to sign him to a large, multi-year contract, even if he is still a valuable contributor today, especially since it may cost up to $200 million. That price tag simply doesn’t match the return on investment that certain front offices are seeking. It might not be the greatest idea to pay top bucks for a veteran like Bregman when there are so many younger, less expensive players available.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been circling around free agent Alex Bregman all offseason

The Jays are unlikely to have to spend a fortune to acquire him. Insider Ben Nicholson, believes the Jays will maintain a low profile during the negotiations, believing Bregman will be willing to a shorter contract with opt-outs. It’s a wise strategy—they won’t get sucked into a bidding war, but the club will try to obtain him if the price drops. The Detroit Tigers may make Bregman a higher offer, but they are allegedly unwilling to pay the $200 million he is requesting. Thus, it appears that the Jays are waiting for the market to settle down.

Toronto’s offense might be greatly enhanced if they are able to acquire Bregman. He is a seasoned player who would add leadership and a winning mindset to a club that is eager to succeed. Imagine him positioned between Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.—what a terrifying trio. A strong comeback by Bichette, who just had a poor season, along with Bregman’s reliability, might make the Blue Jays’ lineup appear much more threatening in 2025.

However, the Jays are happy to let Bregman’s market develop as spring training approaches in just one month. Who knows? Perhaps the 30-year-old will decide to accept a shorter, more flexible contract after becoming weary of waiting for that big transaction. Toronto might jump in and sign him on their terms if that occurs. To ensure they don’t overextend themselves in search of the proper fit, the Jays are leaving their options open in the interim.
