Per a 1999 report from the NY Post, former Yankee hurler David Wells introduced Jeter to Veruka, a place they then used to frequent often. It was a common sight to see Derek Jeter and his Yankees teammates commanding attention, drawing more eyes than even the biggest Hollywood stars. The owner of the trendy SoHo nightclub Veruka, Noel Ashman, took notice and took measures to ensure their safety. He stationed a security guard outside, knowing full well the effect the Yankees had on the city.

The nightclub was no stranger to celebrity guests, with actors gracing its door regularly. But none of them caused a stir quite like the Yankees. “We have lots of actors come in – really big ones,” said the owner. “They get less attention than these guys.” The Yankees it seemed, had an energy that was simply magnetic. Their presence was unforgettable.
