And it’s happening again—the Yankees are spiraling. After dropping a series to the Marlins, New York now finds itself down 0-2 against the Rangers, staring at back-to-back series losses. And the situation is so bad for the Yankees that even the much-anticipated return of Aaron Judge hasn’t sparked the offense. The result? They were silenced once more in a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday night. Nathan Eovaldi dominated on the mound, and when the game hung in the balance, Devin Williams faltered again.
Yes, the reliever, who let the previous game slip away, surrendered the winning run and left the Bronx faithful wondering what comes next. Now, the whispers are turning into questions: What’s wrong with the Yankees? Can this team find a spark before the season slips into dangerous territory? Well, Williams himself has opened up about what went wrong and what comes next, as the Yankees search for answers in a stretch that suddenly feels like a crossroads.
“I was trying to stay with my heater to Jo. I wasn’t really mad about that one. You know, set up the double play. But what really hurt me was the walk to Langford.” Williams shared what hurt the most for him in the second game against the Rangers.

Well, the story started after Will Warren gave the Yankees five solid innings, followed by Camilo Doval and Luke Weaver’s innings. However, Aaron Boone liked the matchup for Devin Williams in the eighth against the heart of the Rangers’ lineup, which had three righties in four spots. And what’s more surprising is that even though Williams had blown Monday’s save and had a rough 7.71 ERA over his last seven games, Boone still went to him in a scoreless game.
And it didn’t go well. Williams got one out before Adolis Garcia ripped a 102.7 mph double to left. Then two walks followed, then a two-run single, and just like that, the Rangers had all they needed. So, Williams has now given up runs in four straight outings, and each one has stung the Yankees. The walk to Wyatt Langford hurt the most, and once again, Williams couldn’t stop the bleeding.
So, what’s next from here? “He did a great job. You know, battling me. He was falling off everything. You know, he won today. I’ll try and get him next,” Williams sounds confident, but would the team’s front office believe the same? Let’s see…
Devin Williams still has the team’s back
Well, Yankees fans probably did a double-take when they saw Devin Williams getting loose for the eighth inning of a 0-0 game Tuesday night. And if you know, this season has been rough for the first-year Yankee. Reportedly, he’s given up 26 runs already, the same total he allowed over the last three seasons combined.

It’s been a rollercoaster. Williams surrendered 15 earned runs from March through May and lost the closer’s job to Luke Weaver. Then Weaver got hurt, and Williams stepped back in and actually looked like his old self. Reportedly, he gave up just one run in 10 June outings and stayed steady through most of July.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Devin Williams the Yankees' Achilles' heel, or can he bounce back to save their season?

However, the last week has been ugly. Williams has given up six runs in 3.2 innings over his last four appearances, blowing two saves. So now, with the Yankees one loss away from falling out of the playoff picture after Wednesday’s game against the Rangers, Boone was asked how he feels about where his team stands.
“Look, we have really good guys down there, Devin included,” Boone said.

So, Boone’s comments hinted that Williams could be on the verge of losing the closer job again if he can’t start finishing games. On paper, the Yankees surely look like they have plenty of arms to handle the ninth inning, but even after making moves at the trade deadline, Boone might not feel like he has as many reliable options as he’d like. Let’s see how the Yankees turn the tables from here.
