Another day, another ejection. While we have barely settled from Aaron Boone’s fiery dismissal on Tuesday, here comes a sequel. This time, starring Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo. The scene was all too familiar: Heated words, animated gestures, and an emphatic ejection that left fans buzzing. But unlike Boone’s blow-up, which reignited the debate over umpiring standards, Lovullo’s exit might not draw the same sympathy.
The frustration was real, the passion undeniable, but in this case, the umpires might have gotten it right!
It all started after Lovullo erupted in frustration after umpires ruled that shortstop Jordan Lawlar interfered with the Giants’ baserunner Christian Koss during a key play. If you have missed the scene, Lawlar was positioned in the base path between second and third when Koss collided with him. This sent the Giants’ runner to the ground in visible pain. After a video review, the umpiring crew assessed Lawlar with interference, awarding Koss third base.

Now that was enough to infuriate Lovullo.

Here comes the moment! Lovullo stormed out of the dugout to confront the officials and refused to leave the field until he was ejected. But just before exiting, he hilariously pointed to each member of the officiating crew and delivered his ejection gesture to all four umpires!
Now that’s what we call turning the tables! The umpires authorized to eject the unruly members faced the music this time.
However, by checking the highlight, we believe that Lovullo might not have a strong case to take the fight to the umpires.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Lovullo's ejection of umpires a legendary move or just a desperate act from a struggling manager?
Have an interesting take?
Replays clearly showed Koss colliding with Lawlar, who was standing in the base path between second and third. Hence, it was valid enough for the umpires to rule that Lawlar had interfered with the runner. Moreover, interference is not a reviewable call under MLB rules. That may have been at the heart of Lovullo’s frustration, but all went in vain.
While fans are used to seeing umpires eject players and managers, the opposite is a rare sight, making this incident all the more hilarious. But given how the Diamondbacks are currently faring, Lovullo has every reason to fight for a run.
Fans are left spellbound by the Diamondbacks’ manager
While fans question the decision, they are leaving no chance to cherish the rare moment of a manager trying to eject the umpires!
Best thing he’s done all year😂

Let us be honest for a sec. Few fans dream of witnessing this scene in real that the umpires are getting ejected after a blown-up call! But does that mean this is the best act of Lovullo in the years? Well, under Lovullo, the Diamondbacks had nothing extraordinary. In 2024, it was 89-73 and 84-78 in 2023. Remember his bullpen antics? Lovullo’s bullpen management has faced scrutiny. His decision to forgo naming a traditional closer in favor of matchup-based late-inning strategies has been controversial. All these might have contributed to a few fans thinking the ejection sign to the umpires might be the best thing done by Lovullo in recent times.
Interesting argument. I get he gotta stick up for his players but that infielder clearly stepped right into the base runner and interfered.

Absolutely! See, there is no harm in standing up for the players. Boone is the best example here. But standing against a fair call is not something expected from a veteran. The replay clearly shows how Lawlar came in between the paths of Koss. Rule 6.01(c) states that when a fielder without the ball impedes a runner’s progress, it’s called obstruction. Here, the runner is awarded the next base or more, based on the umpire’s judgment of what would have happened without the obstruction. So, nothing unbiased against the Diamondbacks here.

“TLov ejected 4 umpires. Ramon Laureano ejected 1 umpire. Bad day for umpires so far.” Well, the day not only saw the ejection sign from Lovullo, but also the Twins-Orioles game saw the Orioles’ outfielder Ramon Laureano doing the same. He was also ejected, but before that, the same ejection sign was shown to the umpires. Single day and 5 ejections shown to the umpires. That’s called turning the tables!
“Oh, this one is amazing.” Why not, when it is not a common sight to witness daily? While the antics are the first time this season, baseball is well accustomed to the same. Remember Lou Piniella’s Dirt-Kicking antics in 2007? As the Cubs manager, he was arguing a close play at third base. But after getting tossed, Piniella kicked dirt, threw his hat, and did a full-on tirade around third base. Even today, it’s considered one of the most iconic ejection reactions ever. Let’s see if the Diamondbacks’ manager’s antics take a place as one of the best moments.
It was also unexpected to the umpires that someone actually showed them an ejection sign on the field! One user mentioned, “Just watched this and it was hilarious!!” The moment when the umpires looked clueless seeing Lovullo’s ejection signs was entertaining to say the least. And well, this might even become a new trend of protesting the umpire’s call from now on. For the umpires, it’s time to brace up as a few more ejection calls are surely coming their way.
